i think my biggest opinionated atproto take is "if you cant nuke your DB and rebuild 90-99% of your app state from just backfill then youre doing it wrong". all in on PDS being the only real authoritites on state in the network

open source projects may need to lock PRs to trusted folks. careless slop is sucking the life out of maintainers. we need better tools to talk to and onboard new contributors while interacting on issues. more friction could actually help new folks who care stand out, and let the community breathe

unlike social media, which is a mature technology, LLMs are not. we have a better opportunity to steer their direction in a way that might undo the effects of social media. but you have to start small and at points of leverage.

For my part, seeing AI catch up to my abilities in several domains has been painful. I feel a sense of loss. And I’m in a position where I have (a tiny bit of) leverage and control over the process. I can only imagine how painful it would be if I felt like it were completely out of my hands

God I swear to god I feel like a crazy person talking to "non deterministic means unbounded outcomes" types, telling them we have ways to make robustness out of non determinism that's literally what engineering is

When (not if) the Tech Monopolies come for the Atmosphere, can we create the institutional structures to protect what we have? Right now we're nowhere near ready. No company harmed the web more than Google, not even close, while claiming to help which many believed. What can we learn and how fast?

initial feelings on sol6 is negative, feels a lot dumber. this might actually be a good thing? similar to how i find it important to use worse models to stay familiar with the codebase. it is annoying though.

GUI that's mobile friendly, "Portals" to the app, easy way to switch thread. I use opencode the most because the gui is good, I don't mind collie + herdr and like that it decomposes harness from mobile even the its gui is not good, and ampcode has puck and portals which is pretty nice.

You live long enough to see the failures. Ideally juniors now speed up the process by throwing out way more code now than current seniors have ever written. In the bad case they keep burning tokens to go down rabbit holes

btw i think the reason i like magical sigils and worlds based around them is because magical sigils are actually real. you open up a satellite LNB and what you find is shapes wrought from metal to manipulate unseen forces. you can't tell me they're not magical sigils
picture of the inside of a satellite low-noise block downconverter (LNB), the circuit in the focal point of a satellite TV dish. this one's a rectangular metal case with inside of it a printed circuit board full of gold-plated traces. many have strange shapes you wouldn't find in other electronics. scientifically you might call them microstrip filters, but really they're nothing more than a well-understood magical rune
