Add: to briefly spotlight young professionals of color, the Black/Brown Tax still exists in Portland but it’s less severe (doubly/triply so IMO) than anywhere else in the state

I’m being completely serious: Portland has the lowest cost of living in the whole damn state at the moment. All the cities with lower rents have added car dependency expenses and other inconveniences that tip the scales. I use Keizer as my bellwether, and seriously, Portland is the better deal.

Last thing I’ll say on this is that if you’re a seedling getting into politics and you have any backbone to fight for marginalized people, you will subsequently face operators who will beat that instinct out of you. You must stay true to your center. You know in your gut & heart what you must do.

Cities and special districts fill this void very well but, as we’ve seen, you get what you pay for in volunteer roles and you can’t MAKE city/local gov’t inherently valuable toward serving the population if there is some counterweight attached (see: police funding as a proportion of the city budget)

Glonzo Barnett III @husseman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Totally! I’m of the opinion that we need 36 total school districts (1 per county), run by massive county commissions (15-21 seats instead of 3-5 useless pricks), with ESDs serving VERY specialized functions & the state more than a passive observer. K-12 ed is NOT consigned to be tempest-tossed!

(Sorry for blowing up your mentions, Stephen, but state ed coverage centering on “fewer kids and resources forever” drives me fucking insane and is counterintuitive to the fact that We Are Going to Win and liberal, multiracial democracy remains an ideal to strive for in this state/country) -30-

Some buildings are 75-100 years old, falling apart, and need to be rehabbed/knocked down/made into housing. That is a NATURAL outcome. And it should not stop districts to strive for better S:T ratio balance, the right mix of extracurriculars (like, WAY fewer FB teams), & needed staff specialties

Closing a few schools is absolutely the answer, but nobody asks the question of, “What if we only close six schools and trust that 10,000 new units of housing plus families buying into Portland balance out enrollment?” That is not just a real scenario but the MOST LIKELY one for urban SDs in Oregon

Glonzo Barnett III @husseman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Oregon is already, and will be for a long time, a safe haven for families looking to escape red-state horrors and needs to act like it. This means keeping resources at the ready Local control in practice statewide has meant 150-day years and supes/boards that don’t enforce best learning practices

Glonzo Barnett III @husseman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The real issue, which nobody covering K-12 ed will report on somehow, is that 197 school districts is completely unviable and has led to many crushing outcomes PPS needs to be combined with Parkrose, David Douglas, Gresham-Barlow, Corbett etc. into a Multnomah County School District
