Reading some things Mum wrote for the kids about her childhood and her father’s life. I had forgotten that my granddad, who became a gardener after the war, did some work in Vita Sackville-West West’s garden at Sissinghurst!

We have been to the funeral director and organised the Christchurch end of things - viewing and cremation and paperwork etc - Nelson branch will contact us about a memorial service. I am a bit wrung out.

I got a call at 3am to say Mum had slipped peacefully away a few minutes before. She’s with the funeral director now (after being wheeled out through an honour guard of staff members). We’ll have a memorial service in Nelson in a week or two.

Phone’s been weird and wouldn’t connect from Mum’s place. Mum’s still hanging on. She’s getting morphine through a line now, and they can add a pump if she needs even more.

Gat a call from the rest home this morning to say Mum’s breathing was getting worse. Then when we arrived she was laying so still and so quietly I had a wee panic that we were too late, but she’s moving and snoring now.

My counterpoint to “but the long light evenings are nice” argument for daylight savings, is how things work in tropical areas like Queensland. The sun switches off at 6pm, but it’s warm and there are many light-making technologies, so life just goes on after dark. Warm dark evenings are awesome.

They have mum dressed and sitting in a recliner today. At first glance it makes her look a bit less unwell, but she really isn’t

Kids’ flight keeps getting delayed. Can we please have a mass finger crossing that they actually get here.

Mum’s definitely gone down hill since yesterday - her breathing is a bit less easy and she seems to be seeing us less.

Young folk have decided they want to come down and will be arriving tomorrow evening. One nice thing about having adult kids is this feels like spreading the load more than it does having more people to support.

Just had someone in checking end-of-life preferences like if there are religious/cultural needs, and whether we want to be called immediately if she passes overnight. Confronting, but a good conversation to have and done in a very caring but matter-of-fact manner.

Mum’s maybe a bit less aware than yesterday, but not much different. Had a chat with the nurse who emphasised that there’s no predicting how long things will take. That said lunchtime sandwiches seem to have been organised for us for at least the next couple of days.

Have had a long hot shower. The rest of the evening’s plans involve pjs, takeaways, wine, Star Trek, and as many little treats as I can lay my hands on.

We’ve left Mum now (I have to pick up a prescription while the pharmacy is still open). When I kissed her goodbye I stroked her hair and she lifted up her hand and stroked mine too

This feels like a great premise for a picture book (of the weird conceptual variety).

One of the nurses came in to get my consent as EPoA for Mum to have subcutaneous comfort meds, which I think is a very good idea (she seems comfortable at the moment and all I want is for things to stay that way)

Back at Mum’s after going home in the early evening yesterday. She’s awake and quite smiley this morning. Her lovely carer is finding us some sandwiches so we don’t have to hunt and gather our own lunch.

We’re at Mum’s for the afternoon (at least) after getting a message that she’s deteriorating. She’s tucked up in bed and is asleep now, but was awake when we arrived. We played her the Niko Ne Zna slot on Radio Active from a few weeks back, which she seemed to like.

Arrived to see Mim at 6pm and she was already being got ready for bed. We sat with her for a bit but she really just seemed to want to be left to sleep. We should be able to go in earlier tomorrow and I’ll take something quiet to do in case i feel the need to settle in.

I have officially taken a break from work. I’ve only been managing an hour or two a day and even that has been exhausting. I’ll miss having something positive to focus on, but Mum and my health need to come first.

Mum barely opened her eyes this afternoon. I spent an hour doing a story time of favourite picture books of long ago: The Giant Jam Sandwich, Meal One, The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate, assorted Frog and Toad, Avocado Baby…

Going through a box of books, trying to recreate a library story hour for Mum tomorrow and I find this picture drawn by me aged, according to the note on the back, 5 1/2. Mum and I are in the bath and Dad is bringing us drinks (we had a tiny hot water tank so shared baths were the norm)
A child’s drawing in green ballpoint pen on lined paper. It shows three simple figures and beneath the words “Mummy Mother have a bath as often as you can”

Mum was a bit tireder and less present today, but still seemed pleased to see us. We watched a couple of episodes of The Muppets with her. The Twiggy episode has a Beatles song and an AA Milne poem - which is a lot of cultural touch points in under 30 mins.

Thinking way ahead, but this Christmas is likely to be: 1)Sucky 2)Without many commitment. Seriously considering running away and/or outsourcing everything. Would love to hear any ideas/experiences for low effort non-traditional ways 2-4 adults could spend the season.

My GP just switched from Manage My Health to a different portal. They closed down MMH a week before the new portal opened, and now when I try to sign into the new portal it says it doesn’t yet work on IOS. It all seems a bit chaotic.

When I pick Pekapeka up, he leans his head into my shoulder and rubs it around. Then, because he is aptly named, he tries to turn in my arms so his head is down and his tail is up. It is both very sweet and quite ridiculous.

I’m super tired today and considering not going to see Mum today. I’m really aware that both the extra activity and emotional upheaval leave me at risk for a flare. I’m figuring a crash into my plans, but would like to hold it off until I’ve done all the things I need to do. Thus pacing myself.

Kids on a plane. Am glad they both have flatmates to pick them up from the airport, and live in the sort of flats where people give a shit about each other. Am about to be on the sofa drowning my sorrows in a VERY large cup of tea.

Young folks’ last day for this visit. We spent a good chunk of the afternoon with Mum. I read her a lot of T.S Eliot and got a bit choked up in The Journey of the Magi. For a bit Mum seemed to be pointing and trying to say something, but then she drifted off again.

It’s J’s birthday on Sunday and I am desperately hoping that’s not the day Mum chooses. J doesn’t get particularly hung up on anniversaries, but I do and I really don’t want to be miserable for all his future birthdays.

Only a quick visit with Mum today as J worked a full 9-5 first. She was sleepy, but opened her eyes and smiled at us a few times. It’s such a strange and sad time, but there’s beauty too.

Today we pulled a bunch of (mostly poetry) books off Mum’s shelf and took turns reading aloud. She seemed much tireder today, but was still reaching for my hand.
A stack of books including Hone Tuwhare, Rachel Bush, the Virago Book of Wicked Verse, Under Milk Wood and others.

What are the odds of this being available in Aotearoa at all, ever? Actually funded? It would be so good to have a last line of defence.
