I have a concert next Tuesday, 20th October. Three pieces connected by the end of WWII: Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Martinů’s Fourth Symphony. All wonderful pieces of music. In particular, the Martinů is an undervalued masterpiece. Do come!

Hiking in the Cederbergs, Western Cape. I expected the spectacular scenery. However this rather large ‘fuzzy jewel beetle’ was a bonus sighting.
Not really sure I can do this justice. Imagine a very large black beetle, but with a shell covered in rows of tufts of yellow fluff.

We're on holiday in the Western Cape, so here is a Cape sunbird on some fynbos from our hike earlier today. #Hermanus #Fernkloofreserve #sunbird #SouthAfrica
A medium sized bird with long black tail feathers, speckled breast and stabby looking black beak perched on the top of a black flower bud.

If you ever need an example of a Kerry accent, this video has it in all its glory. Yes, it is very different to a Hollywood "Irish" accent. And yes, it is pretty much impenetrable to the untrained (non-Kerry) ear. Healthy bacon, floury potatoes and (I think) crubeens. #Ireland #accents

🐔 If you eat chicken, where you eat matters. Some companies are switching to healthier, slower-growing breeds. Others are still serving #Frankenchickens. Use your spending power. #GoForSlow 🐔 Take action: bit.ly/4rtnLBK
The image is a split graphic indicating restaurant chains' stances on serving "Frankenchickens." On the green side, labeled "Committed to Stop Serving Frankenchickens," are brands: Greggs, Wahaca, Nando's, Pret, and Subway. The red side, labeled "Happy to Keep Serving Frankenchickens," includes Domino's Pizza, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Wagamama, Taco Bell, and KFC, among others.

Ooo yes, I remember the Monday Club. Was the hard right when I was at Oxford in the '80s. Strangely enough, I am having dinner with William Hague tonight, I think he might have sidled up to them, back in the day.

I recommend (if you haven't already read) inquisitivebiologist.com/2021/09/08/b.... Many ecologists recommend growing lots more trees by encouraging existing forests to expand, not planting (often non-native) saplings in plastic deer guards. Also, UK has too many wild deer, eat more venison.

Book review – Islands of Abandonment: Life in the Post-Human Landscape
Poetic and spellbinding, Islands of Abandonment explores how nature rushes back in when humans abandon a place. It haunted me long after I finished it.

The rosé section at Intermarché, Roquefort-les-Pins. Not quite all of it, some more behind me. Rather looking forward to retiring to the Cote d'Azur ....
A complete section of a large supermarket, five shelves high, stretching into the distance, completely filled with dozens of different types of rosé wines.

I just assume if it's all beige and white, it's AI. If there's a shiny black and red kitchen, and a bathroom with bizarre, grubby tiling, then it's definitely not 😆 (Why do the French have such terrible bathrooms?)

Light Perpetual probably better for a weekend read. The Ellmann was the definitive Joyce biography back in its day but has now been overtaken somewhat by studies on Nora Barnacle and Lucia Joyce, who get just passing mentions from Ellmann, from what I remember.

1. A School for Elephants by Sophy Roberts (not as interesting as her wonderful Lost Pianos of Siberia). 2. Is A River Alive by Robert MacFarlane. UK water company CEOs need to read this. 3. Brutto: A (Simple) Florentine Cookbook by Norman Russell. I still miss Russell, such a shock when he died.

If they'd had that headline for cremants, fair enough. But not for the wines they've listed. I didn't check all of them, but my guess is they're all in the £30+ range, same as a reasonable grower champagne. When we lived in London our go-to champagne was Brochet from Handford, which was around £30.
120 2
Sarah Ramanauskas @hundredgrapes.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Exactly. This headline is just so wrong in so many ways. Now we've moved to Paris, and can't get English sparkling, we tend to buy Franciacorta instead (via the internet), mostly to show our French guests that the Italians can do sparkling just as well as the Champenois 😆
010 1
Sarah Ramanauskas @hundredgrapes.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The top wine in this list currently retails in the UK for £43-£46. That's £4 less than Veuve Cliquot at Tesco. Not saying it compares to Veuve, but good English sparkling is definitely not "a fraction of the price" of Champagne.
