Sure he’s walked around the world but I just want a supercut of him returning to Hull after 28 years and talking about the comparative state of the high street and whether partial pedestrianisation was a success.

I liked it better before it was pedestrianised. Felt so much more alive, and the buses would've dropped you in the heart of town.

Seeing a lot of these spring up on my Facebook lately for some reason... lot of them seem to be trains, buses or cars stored away for restoration with preservation societies, and more often than not, you'll find the owner very irate in the comments or on the society page.

Hey, if certain family members can swing from Tory (2019) to Reform (2024) to apparently Tory again (a couple weeks ago?), anyone can do it. Not an ideal net result, but this is according to someone who often moans 'all politicians are in it for themselves'.

Anyway, I rode Stagecoach #bus route 40, as you might have guessed, by way of Yutong E10 63154. Quality vehicle and a quality Saturday service, despite a shonky timetable and running about five minutes late. If you wanted definition of a 'community lifeline' bus for East #Hull, this is it.

At this point, I'd prefer a nice tabulated outline of times rather than having to do mental calculations for an hourly #bus service... isn't this why they call it a bus timeTABLE? #hull
Portrait photograph of a slightly glared-out bus timetable provided by Hull City Council at the Barham Road Shops bus stop. The route, the 40 to Hull Interchange (effective 31 March 2024), running via Maybury (Road), Cavendish (Road) and Garden Village, displays 'usual times' between stops: Cromarty Road is advertised as being 3 minutes away, Lambwath Road is advertised as 9 minutes, Endymion Street is advertised as 14 minutes and Hull Interchange is advertised as 21 minutes.

The actual timetable outlay is one tabled block for Mondays to Fridays. Text variably in black-on-white and white-on-blue is, and I quote, '0856 Hull Interchange then at 56 Hull Interchange past until 1456 Hull Interchange'. Below this is the timetable for Saturdays, which reads: '0856 Hull Interchange then at 56 Hull Interchange past until 1456 Hull Interchange': this inbound stop is not serves by two extra Saturday outbound journeys for some reason. Below these times, for 'Sundays & Public Holiday', reads: 'No Sunday or Public Holiday service from this stop'.

...though upon saying that, we weren't so sure about this at first, but other posts seem to suggest the colander method worked? Eclipse experts, please analyse this fairly trippy photo.

Our DIY viewing efforts didn't get up to much, unfortunately.
Photograph of a woman holding up a blue colander to a piece of paper held by another woman in an attempt to view the aformentioned partial solar eclipse just before totality, which might've worked somewhat but looks really silly. Also held in another hand (face cropped out for privacy) is a DIY cardboard box solar eclipse viewer, of which the hole for the sun to go in has been poked in while trying to hold it up. Hang it in the Louvre.

Mostly pitch black photograph of a partial solar eclipse at totality, with the sun just peeking out in an upper crescent at the top. The photo is a tad dusty because of the lens. Sorry that the alt text is a bit rubbish.

If Burnham wants to extend the free bus scheme permanently, like Scotland does for under-22s, then we should thankfully see rowdy kids drop off the network when the schools go back on. Then again with Scotland, free buses has meant more antisocial behaviour over time: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

How has free bus travel for young people worked in Scotland?
As England moves to give people under the age of 15 free bus travel, under-22s in Scotland have had free bus passes for four years.

To be fair, that would've been good manifesto policy to light a fire under British bus builders' arses (especially given foreign competition) and show an investment in transport, but that'd still be quite the challenge. Labour promised it before in the Corbyn years! www.bbc.co.uk/news/busines...

There's lots of merit in the scheme to get kids out of the house, and if it works in Scotland (where Mr. Burnham generously stole it from), it should work here. But it's all well and good until you're commuting and have to put up with young kids throwing a bottle around and climbing up seats.

How's free #bus travel for under-18s in the height of summer going for people? Of course you won't hear it here, but the reaction I'm seeing from drivers is uniformly negative, ie. kids left to run around buses like its a nursery. For me, it sounds like a good idea until you actually experience it.

Hate to roll up on the thread uninvited, but... "All buses must be electric by 2027" 2026 is nearly halfway over, and as of March 2025, there are at least 30,558 buses in England. Only 12% of those are electric. You simply cannot scale up production to electrify the remaining 88% in four months.

#Pride in #Hull again today; my first Pride for a few years now. Didn't honestly think of going today given other commitments, but soon changed my mind when #Stagecoach brought a new Pride-liveried #bus in!
Dark blue double-decker Stagecoach bus (fleet no. 10741, registration SN66 VXJ) with orange, blue and green elements along the bottom and various Pride logos spread around the front and sides; a sticker above the door next to a Progress Pride flag states 'Proudly supporting Pride'. The scene here is someone stepping off the bus while off to the right, a Stagecoach gazebo stall is being attended to by Stagecoach drivers (one of whom is mugging for the camera) and interested members of the public.

Though maybe something like this might be more suitable - and less expensive to convert - in this hypothetical scenario:
