There's a lot of national politics going on right now but if you'll permit me drag us back down to the local level for a moment. Nottingham City repaved these footpaths with black asphalt just in time for the heatwave. I don't mind the repaving but decisions like this are what makes it unbearable.

This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.
