Old; paranormalist; yes, I'm one of those deluded persons that thinks we coexist with interdimensional species that toy with us incessantly and I write tortured rubbish about it for a glossy 'haunted' mag who are kind enough to humour my oddness...

#phantomFriday Castle View Leicester, haunt of Black Annis, blue faced bogey woman who predated on errant children. Concocted from a nun who died in 1477, or a witch who predicted the fate of Richard III.. she was maybe an ancient deity..who dwelt in caves that connected to the castle by tunnels..

#phantomsfriday Artist Serafino Macchiati 1861 - 1916 often depicted ghastly apparitions suggesting a wary interest in spiritualism. His otherworldly art implies a hidden world teeming with restless spirits in the comfortable surrounds of the bourgeoisie. (P.S He didn't invent Macchiato coffee)

A lady at the place I work tells me she visited the Four Crosses at Cannock last Friday the thirteenth {of Feb}.. {on an organised ghost hunt of course}.. "a quiet night", she informs me.. except for the ghostly crying of a baby that only she {and an 'unknown to her' man} heard.. twice in an hour!

My conversation with film director Bryn Chainey on folklore, folk horror and hauntology in RABBIT TRAP (starring Dev Patel and Rose McEwen) is out now in Fortean Times.
1970s Wales, a fairy ring, an otherworldly child, repressed memories, hallucinatory landscapes and layers of menacing whispers and unsettling sounds. With these credentials, Rabbit Trap will appeal to connoisseurs of folklore, folk horror and hauntology. MARIA J PÉREZ CUERVO spoke to director BRYN CHAINEY about his debut feature film and its influences.

With the current dynamics of blink-and-you'll-miss-it cinema releases followed by their drowning in the whirlpool of streaming services, independ. ent films can be easy to overlook, but Bryn Chainey's first full-length feature deserves attention as one of the most interesting folk horror adjacent efforts of recent years.

Darcy (Dev Patel) and Daphne (Rose McEwen) are a musician couple who seclude themselves in a house in the Welsh countryside to work on their new album, but when Darcy steps into a fairy ring, something slippery and ancient is summoned. The arrival of a mercurial, androgynous child (Jade Croot) reawakens a past trauma, destabilising the delicate dynamics between the couple. At the core of the film are hallucinatory sequences

A shepherd in Kintail was settling in for the night, when about twenty cats came & sat round the fire, holding up their paws to warm themselves… —from John Gregorson Campbell’s Witchcraft & Second Sight in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland (1902) #BookologyThursday www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/58894
A shepherd in Kintail, living alone in a bothy, far from other houses, after kindling in the evening a bright cheerful fire, threw himself on a heather bed on the opposite side of the house. About twenty cats entered and sat round the fire, holding up their paws and warming themselves. One went to the window, put a black cap on its head, cried “Hurrah for London!” and vanished. The other cats, one by one, did the same. The cap of the last fell off, and the shepherd caught it, put it on his own head, cried “Hurrah for London!” and followed. He reached London in a twinkling, and with his companions went to drink wine in a cellar. He got drunk and fell asleep. In the morning he was caught, taken before a judge, and sentenced to be hanged. At the gallows he entreated to be allowed to wear the cap he had on in the cellar; it was a present from his mother, and he would like to die with it on. When it came the rope was round his neck. He clapped the cap on his head, and cried “Hurrah for Kintail!” He disappeared with the gallows about his neck, and his friends in Kintail, having by this time missed him, and being assembled in the bothy prior to searching the hills, were much surprised at his strange appearance.

“Drink!” sang the daughter of Miru. “There is no kava like the kava of the dead, and to drink of it once is the reward of living.” In Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Something In It” – one of his 20 published FABLES – a Western missionary ends up in the Polynesian afterlife #BookologyThursday #C19
Illustration to “Something In It”, by E.R. Herman, from the 1914 Longman’s edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Fables. Pen and black ink, brush and wash.

A group of naked Polynesian islanders crouch at the foot of the image, with their backs to us. Squatting amongst them is a bearded European man, also naked. He is looking up at a huge woman (if he stood, he would barely reach her waist). She is dark-skinned and is wearing a grass skirt. Her whole body is covered in swirling tattoos and she is carrying a bowl with both hands. She looks down angrily at the European. Behind her sit two other huge, tattooed women; in the distance there are four more hunched Polynesians.
