I write fantasy and science fiction—Digital Dryad, Jormandr, and a cozy mystery that keeps growing. Seven books about HTML once. A small farm outside Seattle supplies the animals and the interruptions. jenniferkyrnin.com Newsletter: jkk.tips/jenn-bsky-nl

Why do you finish a series rather than stopping at book 1? I watched a video the other day where they were confessing to series that they stopped before the end. But what makes you stop before the series has barely begun?

Dragons are greedy. Dragons are violent. Dragons are selfish. It's regrettable that Jormandr thinks these are virtues. His tail is teaching him better. #DragonOfSeattle #DragonsAreReal

I expected to finish my WIP this month, but I got to about 3/4s through and couldn't bear to write the Dark Night of the Soul, so I paused for almost two weeks. I WROTE THE SCENE YESTERDAY! I felt so bad for MC, but now that I've gotten that out of the way, things are looking up. #AmWriting

I'm listening to TMBG - "Birdhouse In Your Soul" I used to sing this to the child I nannied. I've used it for painting inspiration, and I quote it all the time. It's a favorite! What's your favorite song or musician?

I spent seven hours editing one book at the beginning of the month. And then another three on one chapter. When I sent that chapter to my writing group, there was so much repetition in it, I suspect I sent them the unedited copy. (I didn't. Sigh)

Writers use clean endings as role models. It promises that if you admit you were wrong, your losses get taken back. At the end of The Honey Tree the tree lives and stays scarred. I wanted the ending where being right too late still costs something. Read my blog: jkk.tips/jenn-bsky-jkw-mg

One of the things about writing in the fall is the changing light. I'm always surprised how early it gets dark. This combines with my time blindness when I'm writing to leave me out in my office until well past bedtime. In summer, if it's dark I know I'm late.

Jormandr's best friend (after Tail, of course) is a subservient kobold named Herman. Herman cared for the hoard and the cave system while Jormandr slept, and he's not exactly sure that an awake dragon is better than a sleeping one.

I've decided my memoir would be called "Mouse Proof Detergent" which makes me laugh and everyone else say, "what?" For my writing journey specifically, I'd probably call it "Journey to the Center of the Forest" Or maybe "Dragons Win."

The most frustrating time to find an error in my books is after it's published and has been sold for several years. That's especially annoying when it's my trad-published books, as they aren't going to want to edit it to fix that typo I found on page 372. #writersofbluesky

Do you read new genres? The genre decision is something I make based on how tired I am. If I'm exhausted I stick with my tried-and-true faves like fantasy or scifi. But I am not opposed to reading other genres. Some of the best books I've read have been outside my comfort zone.

Some of you may know me for my years of writing about HTML. I wrote online for 18 years about HTML, CSS, and web design. I also wrote 6 books about web development. That's where I got the idea for Digital Dryad. Sierra uses a scripting language to interact with the Prime.

I struggle to relate to Jormandr's accountant, Herman, a character in my dragon stories. He has an enormous family (100s of kids), loves spreadsheets, and isn't afraid of his dragon boss. He's also a kobold. #DragonOfSeattle #DragonsAreReal #dragons

Winona is sure the beekeeper across the river wants to kill her grove. She's wrong. The fungus she's terrified of is called honey fungus for the color of its caps. Unrelated to bees. She was wrong about the bees. She was right about the rot. jkk.tips/jenn-bsky-jkw-mg
A wide view of the cover art for The Honey Tree. A row of white beehives sits on the far bank of a broad blue river, and a dryad with long white hair braided with willow leaves watches them from the near bank at the right edge. The book cover sits on the left, titled The Honey Tree, a Digital Dryad story by Jennifer Kyrnin.

Jormandr is 100% confident—over-the-top, unjustifiably confident. He's also loyal (when he remembers) and cautious (when he's not bragging). These may seem like flaws, but... Who am I kidding, they're flaws. Are you willing to argue with a fire-breathing dragon? #dragons #DragonOfSeattle

Note to young Jenn: Don't stop #writing your #fiction and keep submitting. The rejections are like dunking your head in boiling acid every time, but if you stop you'll be mad at yourself when you're older. And when you do get an acceptance letter, your skin gets a fraction thicker.

Friends ask why I don't have chickens. I was writing in my office and my neighbors chickens were angry about it. I was trying to write a fight scene and all I could hear was, "Squawk! Squawk!" Chickens are loud, even without roosters. Plus, my dog would probably kill them, and I'd be sad.

#editingInPublic Do you struggle with names? Naming characters is hard, but I struggle with remembering what I named them from day to day. I have named the same sasquatch character in Jormandr's stories Bob, Karl, Tom, Nick, and probably a few others. All the same guy.

I think acronyms can be really funny when used well. I haven't used any in my work regularly, but I consider it all the time. They evoke a more governmental or militaristic feel, especially when they can be pronounced (like FUBAR, for example). #writersofbluesky #WritingCommunity

I always wonder why, when expressing a fear or phobia that you have to endure (like going to the dentist), other people in that situation often ask, "are you okay?" "No. I mentioned that I'm terrified out of my mind. Why would you think I'd be okay?"

My favorite font (right now) is Baskerville. And the size depends on how long the day was. Mornings, 9pt is fine. Evenings I shift toward 12pt. And late at night 16pt is my savior. But for publishing I stick with Times New Roman. #typography

Silverlock is an apprentice smith without any real aspirations. When his brother is killed right in front of him, he's forced to become his father's enforcer and into shoved into a world of violence. This is book one of a trilogy and all three books are written. Critiquing is the scary next part.

In Digital Dryad, Leticia, the matriarch of the grove would be the worst person to be trapped in an elevator with. She would simultaneously pontificate on the dangers of technology as proven by the faulty lift, while also filling the air with the scent of burnt apples and cherries as her fear grew.

Have you used Pomodoro? I found that 25 minutes is about enough time for me to get deeply invested in a story and taking a 5 minute break at that point just destroys the flow. These days I write until I don't want to write any more, then I stop and take a break. #writingTips

I imagine the color red considers itself the main character in any situation. It competes with orange to create conflagrations and sees itself in the center of any angry fight. Blue, on the other hand, just waits until red is on a tear and the douses the insanity with one swift wave. #amwriting

Tomorrow is the start of a new critique pass. I'm terrified. I gave my writing group a different novel last week and it was a disaster. They were kind and said it had potential, but I know the truth. I tossed that and am starting them on a trilogy I wrote last year. Fingers crossed it's better.
