🧵1/3 In 2016, we began a movement as the 1st university-based lab using digital open sources to investigate human rights violations. We started w/ @amnesty.org to co-create the Digital Verification Corps. Today, we celebrated 10 years together in Geneva & committed to 10 more.

"LLMs enable you to do things...without having to organize your thoughts, without having to research, it cuts back on so many steps...that was the biggest area that we saw at risk across sectors, particularly those that could impact children whose minds are still developing."

FAM 2.0 was designed to increase the safety, housing stability + well-being of youth experiencing / at risk of CSE. Our evaluation found that when youth can choose trusted adults in their lives, their housing stability, safety, and emotional well-being improve.

She hired & trained six young women refugees from Kakuma as her data team — training them to conduct interviews in 5 languages, transcribe + translate to English, and organize + analyze the data. Bhavya considers them as much partners in the research as her other collaborators.

Specifically, Bhavya is studying the self-identified health needs and access to care of these displaced South Sudanese women living through compounded crises: armed conflict, food insecurity caused in part by climate change, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

STIPENDS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS WORK SUMMER 2024

The Human Rights Center's Student Fellowship provides $8,000 stipends and professional support to UC Berkeley undergraduate, graduate, or graduating students to conduct social justice-related projects with an international or domestic partner organization over the summer and participate in our year-long fellowship.
Since 1994, we've enabled over 400 fellows to work with a broad variety of human rights defenders in over 80 countries. All info sessions are open to Cal students from any discipline, including graduating students.
