(Dread SPOILERS) The ending of Dread was intentionally vague and could go either way, so "Ravenous" could be something else entirely. But I do find it intriguing to have Samus assume the role of "I'm glad she's on our side... Right?" But honestly? I'm just glad we're getting a new Metroid.

(Dread SPOILERS) Prime 3 toyed with the idea of Samus becoming corrupted, but she didn't succumb to it, and I respect that. Dread however, shows what happens when the most capable hunter out there can't control a newfound, deadly, primal urge, and that's scary, even to the Federation.

(Metroid Dread SPOILERS) "Ravenous" immediately brings to mind the final moments from Dread. They can do a really interesting story that ties directly into the gameplay mechanics. Fusion may not have pitted Samus against the Federation like we all assumed, but Dread might have.

I'm losing my mind at the Metroid Ravenous leak, because: 1. It's Metroid; 2. Not only is it Metroid, it's probably a Dread sequel; 3. With a subtitle like that, it makes me think it'll go all out with the big twist from Dread; 4. Potential 2026 release date? And I need to talk about #3.

This is unfortunate news for those who still prefer buying games on physical media, and is certainly a hit to consumer rights, the resale market, and game creators whose businesses rely on the physical market. But from the perspective of professional preservationists, this doesn't have as much of an impact as you might expect.

The reality is that the vast majority of video games produced over the last two decades were not made for dedicated home video game consoles, let alone pressed to physical media. And even when they were released on physical media, a day-one digital patch was all but guaranteed, meaning that even though a disc is preserving data in an accessible way, it may not represent the game that people actually played. Museums and archives have been preparing for this future for a while, with the expectation that putting discs on a shelf isn't going to be a long-term solution for preserving new games.

What continues to baffle us is what the industry expects institutions like ours to do about it. If platform owners are deciding to eliminate physical media and older digital storefronts, then we'd also like to see trade groups like the Entertainment Software Association offer meaningful solutions for archives and museums to legally preserve digital-only content and make it accessible for research. Everyone agrees this is a serious problem, but the ESA has repeatedly opposed the efforts of cultural heritage institutions to reform digital copy protection laws to make it easier to do this work. The industry needs to meaningfully come to the table on this issue, because asking museums to download a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI and hope it'll run in 50 years is not a preservation solution.

You're lucky - CRTs in Europe had no component support, so 480p just wasn't a thing. RGB cables only go up to 480i, and since those were rare and didn't come with consoles, getting a good, clean image was nigh impossible. Doubly so when most PAL games lacked a 60hz option (for whatever reason).

It's so colorful, so sharp, so *clean*, especially compared to composite. And best of all, so much more fluid in motion compared to our crap LED. What a world of difference. Give me those big, juicy scanlines at 240p. I live for this stuff. (Phone cam is crap, but you get the idea.)

I don't have the exact model on me right now, but it's a Sanyo I got from someone who was getting rid of it. I also bought a couple of RGB SCART cables for my old consoles (they only came with crap composite here in Europe), and I can't get over how amazing these old games look now. I am in love.

Nintendo is no saint (at ALL), but they're at least still doing things I'm interested in. When and if they go down the same digital-only route... Well, I have a pretty large backlog and old stuff I love replaying, before I have to give it some thought. That and a big-ass CRT I got last month.

When I think about PS5 exclusives that I really wanted to play, only the Astro Bot games come to mind. I say that even as someone who has a PS5 in the room and didn't pay for it (I'm not a thief; it just belongs to my wife). I'm sure most people got more out of it than I, but that's just kind of it.

It's an awful day for us physical media lovers, but the eventual domino effect from Sony's plan upsets me far more than how little I've cared about them in years, for better or worse. I sold my PS4 ages ago and never considered the PS5, so if nothing else, that takes some of the sting out for me...

My sincerest hope for the "new" Star Fox is that it does well enough for Nintendo to finally move on from Andross's Wacky Lylat Wars Variety Hour™. If they do another remake, Assault needs it most. Lots of great ideas, perfect tone, but a little undercooked in single player mode. Do it, cowards.

Someone linked me to this: www.reddit.com/r/crashbandi... And yeah, it's funny, but have you seen N-Tranced's game over screen? It's an edit from Warped's, and they didn't realize those spikes are Cortex's hair, so they just left them in (Cortex isn't even in that game). Oopsie poopums.

I do genuinely believe some numbnuts on the team will go down this route, finally explaining why Sylux hates Samus and why there is some unknown history between them. There has to be a reason for Samus to be stuck in the past with such prominently featured characters.
