this has been my fav kirara manga for ages, its got some dated gags here and there but its like 90% my kind of humor and i love kokamumo's art so much. also its good yuri when it goes for it (it should do it more imo lol)

It's not going for a fully seamless look, but I think it also does a great job of making the characters feel like they inhabit the world. Just enough painted texture on the character cels to bring them closer to the BGs, plus it's always more believable when you see them move while preserving volume

Expressiveness that is acted out, rather than disconnected reaction shots, impressive volumetry to the drawings despite the conceptual simplicity of the designs, and a fair amount of secondary movement to breathe extra life into the world. Also, a sense of humor rooted in the animation itself!

The term has been detached from its meaning by fandom & producers, so let me point out that Pan Dorobou has (in sensibilities, finesse, and technical prowess) much more Theatrical Animation than whatever popular title you last heard described that way. Takenaka's solo KA episode #02 is a masterclass

Even the projects for young staff that Tanaka alludes to are few and far between, sometimes getting quietly canceled after their promises of platforming many up-and-coming staff. Great when they happen of course, but their limited scope can't really change the trend at the studio

Toei is massive and stable in a way that makes the studio an attractive workplace, so they'll always find & raise amazing talent. But if there's only Carefully Controlled Franchises to work on, the more daring artists eventually reach a point where feel like they gotta leave

Ayaka Nakata directed, boarded, and co-painted the color script for Kusuriya's new opening. Not as striking as her S2 intro, but at its best it showcases her ability to sublimate core ideas of a series into OP imagery that will stick with you. Love the lavish animation by Odashi in cuts 3-4 here
