Even the projects for young staff that Tanaka alludes to are few and far between, sometimes getting quietly canceled after their promises of platforming many up-and-coming staff. Great when they happen of course, but their limited scope can't really change the trend at the studio

Toei is massive and stable in a way that makes the studio an attractive workplace, so they'll always find & raise amazing talent. But if there's only Carefully Controlled Franchises to work on, the more daring artists eventually reach a point where feel like they gotta leave

Ayaka Nakata directed, boarded, and co-painted the color script for Kusuriya's new opening. Not as striking as her S2 intro, but at its best it showcases her ability to sublimate core ideas of a series into OP imagery that will stick with you. Love the lavish animation by Odashi in cuts 3-4 here

Kei Suezawa directing (and fully writing!) a series with a high ceiling is great to see, and Naoyuki Asano's rendering of the characters is unsurprisingly great & likely assuages the pain of introducing disconnected linework to animation. Shout-out to art director Mika Nishimura too, of course

The upcoming Hirayasumi anime is a beauty, in a way that perfectly captures its appeal. Backgrounds fade to white but without introducing surreality, comfortable linework in all layers so that a lot of detail can still come together into a relaxed screen. Lived-in and chill, like it should be
