This is one those headlines that aren't entirely WRONG, but mostly miss the point of the research. Chihuahuas DO show evidence of past interbreeding with coyotes, but that's not the =story=. The story: Basenji & Chihuahua are separated by almost 17,000 years of ancestry. Let's talk about it.

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Johan Egerkrans' Anurognathus, Maurice Wilson's Cynognathus, Charles Knight's Megaloceras, and @rebdart.bsky.social's Triceratops!
A white-furred Anurognathus zooms through a forest in pursuit of a red-eyed insect. Moonlight from a crescent moon filters through the barren tree limbs, casting the scene in a off-white glow.A pair of smooth-skinned, ink-coloured Cynognathus in an arid landscape. One stands over the carcass of a smaller therapsid, blood staining its fangs and claws.A Megaloceras stag stands behind a grassy hill, head held high despite the great spread of its enormous antlers. The ground is covered in a mix of foliage, dotted with patches of snow.A close-up of a pastel blue Triceratops resting its heavy head on the ground. It has several prominent, greyish scales decorating its skin, and the point of its upper beak rests directly upon the earth below.

Saw it today with a friend and I enjoyed it a fair bit. I thought the atmosphere was pretty cool and the action scenes were cool too. I will say though, I did think the ending was a bit anti climactic.

I'm making a series of infographics at the moment for some school groups, and, honestly, I'm really enjoying it!!! They're learning about paleontology, and I was asked if I could provide some images of extinct plants and animals! Here are the first few: #paleoart #scicomm #education #paleontology

Major announcement posted at #Patreon yesterday: I'm producing a big #specevo #dinosaur book devoted to a "no K/Pg impact" scenario over the next 18 months. I'll be sharing updates on the project at Patreon throughout development, so sign up if you want previews! www.patreon.com/markwitton #sciart
A montage of speculative dinosaurs produced thus far for my "Dinosaurs Evolved" project. Clockwise from top left: the green crookedbill; the magnificent fissurefrill; the berk; the grand field titan; the short-faced olymposaur; the steppe fissurefrill, and the ferocious slaughter king. Yeah, ever since the discoveries of Diplodocus scale diversity, the new Edmontosaurus mummies, the new Spicomellus specimens and Haolong I’ve really been trying to spice up my dinosaur drawings by giving each genus as unique an integument as I can.

Sad news today. Liberace, the northern #cassowary I have studied since 2013 passed away this weekend. Liberace was a curious, dynamic, and wonderful bird. I am quite saddened by his death, but feel fortunate to have spent time in his presence and experience his unique personality. He will be missed.

Probably the biggest glow up of the new redesigns IMO. The original wasn’t bad by any means, but this new version of Aphrodite just looks so imposing. I really like the blonde dreadlocks too, they really add to the tough girl aesthetic and compliment her eyes and skin tone really nicely.

I don’t think I love anything as much as the surreal, alien palaeoart of the 70s into the early 90s. These compositions are all naturalistic, but they’re strange and hypernatural in a way that transcends realism. It’s a bizarre but profoundly moving approach to reconstructing the past.
A quilled Velociraptor with tightly folded arms stands atop a pile of loose stones, backed by an intensive purple and orange sunset.A leathery-winged, white-furred Dimorphodon with red legs soars above rough waves. In the distance, jutting stones pierce a sulphurous sky. A red-headed Albertosaurus moves alongside a herd of Lambeosaurus, splashing through a shallow woodland stream. The sky is a smoky blue with wisps of clouds strewn about. The massive form of a colossal asteroid hovers menacingly above it all.An emaciated Triceratops with ragged skin sits in a low squat, shown in stark white against an almost entirely black composition. A cutaway view shows a tangle of roots piercing deep into the ground, a visual representation of the sickness penetrating the dinosaurs body.

I did it!!!! I finished this illustration just in time for ECCC. If you can't make it to the show and want to snag a copy for yourself it's in my store: www.emmalerae.com/store.html Sadly because I injured my arm due to being middle aged, I didn't finish the stargazer piece. :( But soon...
An Illustration of a juvenile Triceratops frolicking after fireflies that have begun to flit around in the dark cretaceous forest. Looming above in the shadows is a Tyrannosaurus watching with its eyes aglow. The colors are greens and blues.

EVERY CURRENT ART OF THIS ANIMAL IS WRONG!!!!!!! for this to have the normal tail its usually depicted with, it would need a string of like 150 caudal vertebrae, instead of the expected 30-40 it had big manual claws and a big bone support for a MEAN angry brow over the eye
