Sad news today. Liberace, the northern #cassowary I have studied since 2013 passed away this weekend. Liberace was a curious, dynamic, and wonderful bird. I am quite saddened by his death, but feel fortunate to have spent time in his presence and experience his unique personality. He will be missed.

The surprising hidden glow of one of Earth’s largest birds
Scientists were surprised to discover cassowaries glow under ultraviolet light. It may help the birds distinguish between different species.

Interestingly, #Spinosaurus mirabilis exhibits crest asymmetry in some specimens. It is a reminiscent of the varying degree of casque asymmetry in modern #cassowaries. Learn more here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... Spinosaurus illustration by Dani Navarro

This is not a wild Australian #emu, but rather a captive animal from the US. We routinely catch emus for data collection, veterinary checks, and transferring enclosures. Restraining emus in this awkward fashion reduces the chance of being kicked by the bird, but they are still incredibly strong!

Hello Bluesky! I joined this platform to redirect some of my social media efforts. My name is Todd Green and I study comparative and functional #anatomy of vertebrate animals―with particular interest in the evolutionary morphology of #flightlessbirds. Below is an adult, southern #cassowary.
