Niwa sifted through Janica's basket of foraged greens, uncovering a pile of milkweed shoots.
"I'll go get water to boil those in." Niwa’s mouth was watering for the tender spring delicacy. Janica smiled and nodded.
Mulling over her conversation with Nathanial-Nathan, Niwa headed for the vernal spring they had passed on the way in. Once there, she mucked out a small basin, straining its water through a filtration tube.
Rewind returned with a dirty bagful of chicken of the woods, reishi, and puffball mushrooms.

Read the full story at Trellis. Vacation itineraries and long flights have a way of making room for fiction. Climate fiction has quietly become one of publishing’s most inventive corners, turning environmental anxiety into some of the most talked-about stories. The genre has grown considerably in recent years, racking up Booker Prizes, National Book Award nods and even its own dedicated accolade (The Climate Fiction Prize). Here are nine of our favorites to take along this summer.

'Hopeful genres like solarpunk can help bring climate discussions to dinner tables'
Some Indigenous communities such as the Maori of the Aotearoa New Zealand understand time as a non-linear concept and navigate their relationship with the non-human environment accordingly. This helps them visualise life and their actions in a scale larger than the "present", shaping how they care for the planet and prepare for crises. Rajat Chaudhuri's 2018 climate fiction novel The Butterfly Effect encourages its readers to think about the world in a similar way, pushing the limitations we have set on time, geography and species. The binary-smashing thriller is now being taught in the English literature curriculum at universities within and outside India, with the Delhi University recently adopting it in their "Genre Fiction" course. Chaudhuri, who has advocated for climate solutions, sustainability and justice at global fora, including with the United Nations, has been working to communicate science through fiction, which he believes has a role and responsibility to engage with people's ecological consciousness. In his other works like the novel Spellcasters, where smog is a character, or the short story collection Wonder Tales For A Warming Planet on the theme of planerary crisis, he makes a conscious attempt to use familiar spaces and narrative tropes to breathe life...

Heirs of Balance by Lesley Parry - Adult Science Fantasy, 90,000 words. ANDOR meets NAUSICAÄ where healing is heresy and compassion sparks rebellion. @lesleyparrybooks #Q #SFF #RF What if medicine was illegal...and you had the power to heal? Includes images of a group of houses in a meadow, surrounded by forest and wind turbines, a mortar and pestle with ground herbs, a pair of glowing hands, and an eco-futuristic castle with glass dome towers. In a post-collapse world where medicine is illegal and even touching the sick is forbidden, Mira Elders risks her life every time she secretly treats the ill with contraband herbs. But when she lays hands on a dying boy in public and magically heals him, secrecy is no longer possible. Her gift should be a miracle. Instead, it marks her for execution.

To survive, Mira flees her village and enlists in the very regime that hunts people like her. As the Median regime tightens its grip through a project that harvests health from prisoners to extend the lives of the elite, a new crackdown on healers looms. But when Mira learns that medicine played a role in causing the Collapse, even rebellion stops looking simple. To join the fight, she will have to wield the very power her world was built to fear—and risk proving the regime right. If you liked THE SURVIVING SKY by Kritika H. The unofficial cover for Withering to Bones by Wattieza Nieves. It features a dark plant background with lungs in the foreground that are growing roots.Comps are show. The Jasmine Throne by Gasha Suri is comped for its political and emotional weight. Blood and Bone for its themes of systemic oppression and resistance. The marrow thieves for the ecological urgency and mythic resonance.

There is an includes section which highlights: Eco apocalyptic elements, MLM relationship, power as both inheritance and burden, lyrical, and introspective, pros, intimate, character, first storytelling, and literary tone with major backdrop.A blurb is given. “War is on the horizon, and Nahele is the last person that could be capable of facing it. A survivor of a devastating shooting, he lives in a body that no longer folio beats him. Pain weakness, and the creeping presence of a dark curse, follow him wherever he goes, whispering that he is too broken to protect anyone – least of all the siblings that depend on him.

Long buried within Nahele is a Gods given gift, one that the shadows inside him have kept smothered for years. But whenever he is near Ashkii – the infuriatingly, magnetic fellow chief–to–be – those powers start to life again. As violence closes in and old wounds, resurface, he is forced to confront the reality of what leadership demands of him, while Ashkii must face what being a leader truly means rising to the occasion of.

Danger gathers around their clans and Nahele must wrestle with the growing malediction within him. One that could claim him at any moment. With war approaching, and the future clouded by shadow… Love, loyalty, and sacrifice will decide whether he rises as the leader, his people need or becomes the very darkness that destroys them.

Because some things cannot be carried without breaking. And some choices, once made, cannot be undone.A picture depicting chapter 1 of the novel is shown. The main two characters are of scaring all, but the first paragraph which says, “ April 13, XX35. This godforsaken world, made to witness his own descent into chaos, with all that ever was, and now all that would ever be. Once vibrant with life and beauty, it had been blessed with effortless harmony, untouched by the greed and destruction that now strangled it. What has been a gift upon its creation was now a curse, it’s brilliant slowly suffocated by the weight of its people’s selfish undoing.”

The character on the left is a brown skinned man with long braids, a blue choker, and blue modern – indigenous wear. To the right of him is another man who is taller with long curly hair that is half up in a bun. He is also brown skinned, but lighter. He wears a red beaded necklace with golden adornment. He also wears a green Polynesian style shirt that has a few buttons open at the top.

A smartass cyborg, a deeply tired gangster, and a literal manufactured pop star walk into a wall of sand, called by a revolutionary musician who’s cheated death. But in the ruined city beyond is a power far greater. #questpit #W #SF #LGBT #hopepunk
On a background of a cracked desert with a solitary, gnarled tree float four pictures suggestive of the ensemble cast. Far left is Eden, a wide-eyed pouting beauty who recently found out that she was designed and created in a lab. Her picture is labeled "A literal manufactured pop star." Below her is Terrah, a butch-looking Black woman sitting at a computer in sunglasses. She is labeled, "A jaded security wrangler," as she has spent much of her career doing street-tough work in spite of her considerable tech skills. Up and to the right is a robot-looking fellow, representing Cid, an ex-military guy who chose to replace his body with a mech, and lost quite a few memories along the way. His caption says "A smart-ass full-conversion cyborg." Below is a skinny figure crouching in front of a laptop, wearing some kind of headset with glowing red "eyes." The prodigy hacker of the group, like all of them, is not what she seems. Her caption says, "And a cat-girl hacker." Two text boxes provide more context. The first says: "In this hollowed-out world, they thought that this was as alive as they would get." The second says, “But when they cross through the sand wall into the digital jungle, they'll learn more than they bargained for about the nature of life.” Finally, in the bottom right is a text box with the words: Working title: The Thorn. Under this, a bulleted list. First: “Cyberpunk but make it about people.” Second: “What if an Al was traumatized though.” Third: “What makes a person ‘real’?” Fourth: “What does it take to change the nature of humanity?” Last: “No irredeemable characters allowed.”

MONK & ROBOT X EMILY WILDE When a blight strikes, an optimistic archivist must track down her hero's fabled garden with the help of an archaic engineer—but secret origins and disillusionment lurk between hard drives and petals. ☀️ Solarpunk 🌷 Floriography 💚 Enby LI #QuestPit #W #A #SF #R
Floral background with the text Mending Glass. By Florrie Auclair. Solarpunk Romantic Sci-FiCharacter portrait of a blond woman making a heart with her hands. Juniper Penrose. An archivist specializing in botany. She idolizes the old world botanist, Miriam, who helped lead the resistance centuries ago. Optimistic and a little reckless, she seeks to uncover the past and find Miriam’s garden. Her drive to help people, sometimes comes at her own expense—like the reason for the mechanical leg she now cherishes.

Next to that is a character portrait of a nonbinary character with light blue eyes and duotone hair in black and blonde. Eli Winter. An aloof engineer who specializes in old world infrastructure programming trying to prove their skills are just as important as the nouveau programmers of the city. They leave their home and grandfather to help Juni break into archaic servers and hard drives—and often pull her out of trouble.Comp slide with Horizon Zero Dawn, Emily Wildes, A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Violet Evergarden, and Fruits Basket. The text pointing at the various media are Ruins of a fallen industrial world, Solarpunk, Flower Motifs, Traveling to help others and find self discovery, Joyful but melancholic character connections, and Sunshine MC x Sunshine Protector Data is as fragile as flower petals. That’s why Juniper, an archivist in a recovering solarpunk world, wants to immortalize the past in the Glass Archives. Safe from time’s decay, unlike the archaic hard drives of the old world. Specifically, information on her hero, Miriam, a botanist who legend says grew a garden of resistant plants—ones that could survive the blight ravaging their crops. But to find it, Juniper will need the help of Eli, an engineer who specializes in old world technology. Together they traverse ruins and follow a trail of flower language from village to village to unearth what led to the dark age of information. But Juniper starts to question her identity when they uncover that the woman she modeled herself after was not the hero she believed.
