I flick on the kitchen lights to see the spindly legs of a huntsman spider tuck themselves behind the electrical panel. There is no better pest control. Only tradeoff is never knowing when you might startle a 5-inch arachnid into hurling itself at you when you reach for a box of oatmeal.

In the Indian River Lagoon, I was heartened to see seagrass returning, and with it, life: crabs & shrimp, pipefish, puffers, barrel-rolling manatees. Released a pretty little red tinged with blue; we tossed mullet at a shadowy snook in the mangroves til thunderheads chased us to the dock. Next time.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

The backyard anoles are dueling for territory under a cloudless sky. Crests are up, dewlaps are flying. One hurled himself Spiderman-style in the 3.5-ft span of air between fence and pine and just missed the landing. He shimmied up the trunk, color-morphing from mint green to russet in two seconds.

🐙🌿 Here is your Friday Flattie. (Yes, that's its real name.) Flatties are in the family Selenopidae. This one (Selenops sp.) was in Arizona on a cliff face; I framed the photo to fully flaunt the flattie's flattitude. Selenopidae is named for Selene, Greek goddess of the moon, for the way these--
A macro photo looking into the face of a spider hunkered down flat on a rock face. The spider - appropriately known as a flattie - is tan and orange-brown with darker brown bands on the legs, and orange chelicerae (the mouthparts that end in the fangs). It blends in quite well with the yellowish/tan rock.
