Scratch that, right after I posted a new book from the library, I was notified by the library that *both* my holds were now available for pickup. So returned The Children of Húrin (an hour after borrowing). Picked up Dungeon Crawler Carl *and* Red Rising. Will be reading DCC first.

New book from the library! The Children of Húrin, by J.R.R. Tolkien. I've never read it, and thought it may be a good read before RoP S3 (cuz I'm one of the few who actually like that show).

Finished King of Ashes. This book starts strong, stays almost as strong, but then the ending falls flat. So much buildup, I really hoped for a satisfying payoff, then fizzle. 500 pages to work towards an anticlimactic 'sup, bro?' moment. 3.8/5.

Made the mistake of looking at reviews for King of Ashes before borrowing it. They tore the book apart, badly; I was hesitant to try it. Now 33% through. Am I reading a different book? It's been really good so far. Book reviews are personal. Read what you like, let the naysayers f*ck off.

New book from the library day! Several books I looked for were already checked out. So I borrowed King of Ashes, by Raymond E. Feist. Hope it's good.

Finished Nettle & Bone. Did turn out to be a fairly fun read. The dust-wife was the best character; the godmother was also good. World building was decent, but could have used a bit more detail. Solid 4/5 for me.

Local news site: human waste found in local body of water used for fishing and recreation. Pay us money to find out the details. I get news outlets need money, especially local news. And maybe it's just me. But I don't think news relating to health and safety should be behind a paywall.

New library book to read! Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. I needed a shorter read (only 240 pages), and this one looked fun.

Lunch was a hearty turkey sandwich with pepper jack cheese, spring mix, and tomatoes, on toast with a bit of mayo. Here's where my wife calls me weird: the toast is cinnamon raisin bread. I swear it not only works, but was utterly delicious.

Finished City of Last Chances, by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Good book, worth a read, but kinda dense. I personally was not attached to any of the characters; possibly too many with not enough focus on any one. Definitely a slow burn. Debating continuing the series eventually, but not yet. 4/5.

Took just shy of $65 dollars to fill up the tank. At Costco. Which is like 40 cents cheaper per gallon than elsewhere around here.

Now 45% through City of Last Chances. This book starts okay; short chapters hopping across too many POV's with nothing apparent to connect them. Then the book clicks, the story starts to ground itself, and then it really goes off the rails (in a good way). This is a story needing patience.

Have to wait till Tuesday to get a new library book. Feel naked without a book to read. Don't want to start a new book in-between, though.

Finished The Spear Cuts Through Water. Not a book for everyone. But if you can handle woke content (non-Christian gods, queer love), it still may not be for you. The writing is an acquired taste. But the story told demands it written this way. The author poured his soul into the story. Superb. 4.7/5

Worked 5-1/2 days this week (used to working 4, bye vacation days). On top of Fall semester starting. On top of being sick 2 different ways. On top of my platelets crashing real BAD. On top of my daughter starting 1st grade and helping her deal with life. It's been a week. Keep on keeping on.

About 41% through The Spear Cuts Through Water. I almost DNF'ed this book. This is a book that you either hate or love, and I kinda hated it early on (written like an ADHD brain's train of thought, it was hard to follow initially). Glad I kept with it. I'm invested now.

I've had Fridays off since last October (minus that one I had to work for a few hours). Today is my last Friday off. So long, four day work week. You were excellent for my health. (Still have four and a half weeks of vacation time left, too, I had built up so much.)

Finished An Ember in the Ashes. There are snippets of a good book here. But too many problems (and personal taste clashes). I'll give it a 3.2/5 (or 2.9/5 for personal tastes).

*Really* want to DNF An Ember in the Ashes. The world building is decent, but the writing is poor. What really got me was when it started with the teeny bopper drama. I just can't. My wife is making me finish it.

A year ago my wife and I went on a date to a Thai restaurant. After, we drove a bit down the road and saw another Thai place. So we determined we had to compare. Yesterday we finally had the second, but couldn't remember enough of the first.

Met with (virtually) my new boss this morning, with the rest of the department. She seems nice enough, but she also seems to have NO clue at all about our department and what we do for the campus. She was hired as a puppet, but doesn't appear to know. This place will sadly eat her alive.

Finished The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin. This trilogy is intense; one of the best series I've ever read. Second book may even be better than the first, maybe. Exceptional. 5/5. Already 10% through The Stone Sky.

There we were, my wife and I, minding our own business, about to enjoy some ice cream, when here comes our dog inside, having been sprayed by a skunk! The first time in this house, but my wife and I are too experienced with this issue. One of the worst ways to delay ice cream. Do not recommend.

Don't typically post what I read to my girls, but tonight I also finished reading The Phantom Tollbooth to my eldest. She's not old enough to get all the word play (and it's easier seeing the words over hearing them), but she enjoyed it. One of my favorites when I was 10ish. Still amazing. 5/5.

Finished The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. Slow to start (a retired pirate gets the band back together, with time taken to get to know enough of that group and their dynamics), but absolutely makes up for it. Not the best book, but both a good and fun read. I recommend; a solid 4.5/5 for me.
