Jane Doe’s story is not an aberration. It is a routine, predictable consequence of a system that reinforces the ugliest expressions of masculinity, and casts women as playthings whose humanity is subordinate to the whims of the pack. www.thenewworld.co.uk/holly-thomas...

We shouldn’t be surprised that no men in the Snapchat group interceded that night. To gain access to the chat in the first place, they had to pledge their allegiance to a brotherhood defined by its brutality, entry to which is gained via torture. www.thenewworld.co.uk/holly-thomas...

I wrote about why no one in the Chi Phi Snapchat spoke up. "While there are so many environments where misogyny and rape culture flourish, few are designed with so little friction and so much institutional support as fraternities." www.thenewworld.co.uk/holly-thomas...

America today is a country where regulators won't allow private companies to air interviews of the opposition on TV, but declare that taxpayer funded propaganda is fine.

Trump’s new AI website is kinda fun, it turns out.
Can the president use taxpayer funds to air his old campaign ads on TV?

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

& that shame always builds up, & no matter what they do to try to mute it (drink/drugs/sex/work, whatever), it always finds its way out, and it's always destructive when it does.

I've seen ppl do this, and I stg it causes the same internal rot as habitual lying. The shame metastasises over time, & unless they lance it (aka tell the truth, which is more daunting the longer they leave it), they end up doubling down to bolster the alternate reality in which they're fine + good

Also, they're talking about events in the BAY AREA, the heart of the kink and sex world in the US. That scene isn't without its problems! But it's been working them out for decades and has real plans and protocols for this. But human safety and consent has never been what the AI men want.

As an autistic woman* it's really interesting when men fall back on "I can't help it, I'm autistic" as an excuse for SA and consent violations because as an autistic person all I've ever done is make myself smaller for a world that won't accommodate my disabilities.

Important, when talking about the threat posed by AI, to ground that convo in the fact that it is made and controlled by people. We keep talking about AI models as though they're these unbiddable entities, because otherwise we'd have to acknowledge the fact that we've let these people run riot.

When male managers have daughters, women at their company are paid more. This suggests two things. One, many men don’t fully appreciate women’s humanity until they’ve “made” one of their own. Two, they are capable of empathy, given a nudge. Wrote this: www.independent.co.uk/voices/world...

One of the Cornell students accused of gang rape, Scott Kretzschmar, denies it and says through his attorney that they are going to “confront” the survivor through the court system. I can already tell you that means victim-blaming, DARVO, and smears. She is going to need a lot more of our support.

The alleged Cornell gang rape looks like an obvious consequence of segregating men and women by sex and placing them in environments where they're expected to perform "peak" masculinity/femininity. No wonder women are dehumanised; no wonder men don't feel like they are friends worth speaking for.

Holly Thomas @holstat.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It's so telling that the "I didn't see it" excuse is almost never deployed in any other context. Men only become scrupulous in this way when reality threatens to inconvenience them. And the "he's always been good to me" line effectively translates to "my welfare is more important than hers"

Holly Thomas @holstat.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Every time something like this happens, I think of the many, many instances in which I've heard men acknowledge their friends' bad behaviour towards women, and conclude that there's nothing they can do, because either 1) they didn't witness it first-hand, or 2) "he's always been a good mate to me"

Sorry for such a bleak post, but I can't stop thinking about the men who were in that Cornell fraternity and presumably saw the Snapchat message allegedly advertising "free pussy," and did nothing, tacitly allowing their friends to allegedly commit gang rape. Men, your passivity destroys lives.

Given the police haven't brought those charges so far, I'm inclined to suspect that the cut also wasn't bad enough to endanger life/cause a serious risk under the Terrorism Act, but that is very much a hunch, and they are separate legal tests, so I could be proven wrong on all of this!

Holly Thomas @holstat.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I've also seen ppl mention charges under s.11 of the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990 (which the police originally arrested Thomas on suspicion of), but, in that case, you'd need to prove that the cut to the boat was likely to endanger the safe navigation of the ship.

Holly Thomas @holstat.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
It is a high bar — besides the risk to public safety/intent to intimidate etc., you'd need to prove more than purely political motivation (that it was done to advance a political/religious/racial/ideological cause). Depending on the evidence, aggravated criminal damage might be easier to prove.

"Criminal damage" is a very broad descriptor "Simple" (not a legal term) damage costing < £5,000 carries a max penalty of a fine of up to £2,500, up to 3 months in custody, or both. But racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage dealt with in the Crown Court carries a max 14-year sentence.
