WHAT A con these so-called
"notebooks" are. They're
just books without any words, and
yet most of them cost much more
than best-selling novels. If I was an
author, I'd just be sending blank
pages to my publisher and going
down the pub.

I wrote about the remarkably accomplished couplets of Mary Leapor, an eighteenth-century servant who wrote a brilliantly witty poem from the point of view of a nail, and died at the age of 24. Sad to imagine what she might have written if she had lived to the age of her hero, Alexander Pope (56).

Remember "Translate in the City"? And "Bristol Translates"? An excellent summer school for literary translators. For 2026, it has moved again, and will become "Oxford Translates". I attended this course back in 2017, and can very happily recommend it to all translators, literary or not! #xl8

And there is a special mention: Kairos, by Jenny Erpenbeck, trans. by Michael Hofmann (Granta). “Michael Hofmann’s taut, vivid and agile translation does eloquent justice to the inner and outer worlds of characters locked into private, and public, histories of doomed desires and broken dreams.”
A photograph of Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck, translated from German by Michael Hofmann and published by Granta, stood on its spine on a wooden desk against a brick wall.

This is the first time that a poetry collection has won the prize. The judges commented: “This volume is an epic achievement: it wrests a visionary language, where tragedy and transcendence meet, from the darkest places of 20th-century experience.” Read the announcement in full tinyurl.com/hebuubv3
