Ah, I assumed you had some expertise in this from the way you answered in your initial reply. Of course anyone can look things up online - but it's fun to connect with other scientists on social media, which is why I posted in the first place! ☺️

So if noise is additive how does that work physically? If you have two things at 'whisper level' (30dbs) does that mean you have combined noise at 60dbs? Which would no longer be whisper level...

Number Two: Is noise additive? As in - if you have background noise that is 30dbs, and you add an item that is also going to make noise at 30dbs, does that mean things will sound louder? And can someone explain how this works? 😆

Holly Kirk @hollykirk.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Stupid questions that my brain has thought of today: Number One: Are veruccas still a thing? They were totally a thing growing up as a swimming kid in 90's UK, but did we get better at floor hygiene since then? 🤔

I completely agree Ian! Industry often imagine biodiversity conservation to be about maintaining/protecting "perfect places", which is of course important. But if we ONLY do this it's a disaster! Every place has potential to be better for biodiversity, we just need help seeing what can be done.

The problem: EIA only triggers when threatened species are present. Degraded land with no listed species? Nature gets ignored entirely. Our solution adds a biodiversity gains assessment alongside the traditional process. Identify the site's ecological potential. Plan for it. Measure it. Reward it.
A constructed wetland in Perth, Western Australia. The wetland was built alongside a housing development, construction of which is ongoing in the background, cranes in use. The wetland has a boardwalk that connects the medium-density housing to the nearby road and bus stops, and has been planted with a diversity of different Australian native plants.

I went looking for numbats this weekend, and all I got was a numbum. 🌏🐾🦘 #wildaus
The retreating rear-end of a numbat is satisfyingly stripey. In this image the naughty numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is scurrying off into the scrub, flicking its bushy tail. You can just see its ears peaking above the rounded grey and white striped rump. The soft pale brown of the ~30cm long animal is perfect camouflage for the drab greens of the surrounding Wandoo woodland foliage.
