Tomorrow's eclipse may appear something like this, but only if you're very lucky.
A b&w illustration by John Coulthart from the 2018 Swan River Press edition of The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson. Illo depicts "The House in the Arena", a vast, circular, crystal edifice built on a plain surrounded by mountains. Floating towards the house is a silhouette of a small human figure; above the Arena is a colossal black sun. Vague forms of enormous Egyptian gods may be seen standing behind the mountains.

Excited to reveal the artwork I drew up for "The Voice in the Night" by William Hope Hodgson for Fathom Press. Hope this one creeps you out. A haunting 1907 short story, it has been reprinted time and time again, and serves as the inspiration for Ishirō Honda’s classic "Matango". #horrorartist
Black and white hand drawn ink illustration of a sequence from the 'Voice in the night' . In the distance, two figures on a schooner on the dark ocean shine a lantern light towards a figure on a rowboat in the foreground. The figure is a haunting being, covered in mysterious fungi and lichens, a horrific blank hollow expression on what could be a face, the rising sun shining part of it in the distance.

William Hope Hodgson inventing cosmic horror in Blackburn is as pleasingly unlikely as Mervyn Peake writing the early chapters of Titus Groan on Blackpool's North Pier, which is a thing that also happened.

"The thing had come more forward over the rail; but now, before the light, it recoiled with a queer, horrible litheness. It slid back, and down, and so out of sight. I only have a confused notion of a wet, glistening Something, and two vile eyes." W H Hodgson - The Ghost Pirates #WyrdWednesday
