I write about trade policy professionally (wish me luck) for @capitolforum.bsky.social. A North Dakotan expat in Minnesota, condemned to watch sports teams that are *almost* good

Fwiw, I was basing my answer on this article, which I happened to read this morning: www.axios.com/local/twin-c...

English World Cup team, MNUFC now share a victory anthem
The Oasis hit has been a MNUFC victory anthem for more than a decade.

My understanding is it was adopted from Manchester City fans, who sing it because Oasis band members are Man City fans themselves. Semi-related, fans of my local MLS team, the Minnesota United, have been singing this at games for like a decade at this point? I guess it's just a soccer song now

Partly time and advancements, I'm sure, but also, in large part, the answer to why it's cheap is China. They produce the vast majority of solar panels at a price that undercuts other producers because the state is subsidizing the industry with a lot of incentives, money, favorable policies, etc

Agreed! It's been so gratifying to watch the local media ecosystem grow sustainably instead of contract

As a journalist living in Minneapolis, I'll make two plugs. 1st, the area is great & doing lots of good work in alt journalism outlets - nonprofit, worker-owned, etc - alongside the traditional places. 2nd, I work in policy/trade journalism, which has been a more stable part of the industry (so far)

There's a lot of small papers in more rural counties or in smaller towns in MN (and everywhere) that have shuttered in the past 5-10 years, but have name recognition/credibility locally. I bet it wouldn't even take much money, comparatively, to get them back up and running

There's a quick market rally happening, but I assume it will soon start to sink in for them that he only removed the worst of the tariffs. There's still a 10% duty on nearly all imports and he *raised* it for China to 125% - and this is still in addition to the ones on cars, steel and aluminum

This is from just a couple days ago. Not as explicit as he is sometimes on this, but he clearly thinks the other countries are just handing money to the US rather than US importers paying the duties upon goods entering

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie once I started thinking of it as like really well-acted Gossip Girl but Catholic Church. Plus it gave us Isabella Rossellini as a nun getting to yell at a bunch of cardinals, which is real treat

Hm, to my knowledge it didn't go anywhere officially, but it's certainly a methodology they like, so it seems possible it could resurface in the next administration

Will he? That's a different question and pretty unclear at this point. He has proposed a wide variety of tariffs for his second term and it seems likely at least some of them will come to fruition. But based on his first term, he also likes to use them as threats to force negotiations

Hannah Monicken @hmonicken.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
Can Trump impose these tariffs? Yes, probably. USMCA (the new NAFTA, negotiated during his first term) has a fairly broad national security exception that the US could invoke

Last night, I was minding my own business when my editor texts me a link to Trump threatening a 25 percent tariff on Mexico and Canada. Amid vivid flashbacks to all the times during the first admin when I covered policy-by-tweet announcements, I wrote it up: insidetrade.com/share/181732

I am from North Dakota originally and people are always surprised when I tell them about how it was basically a socialist state for a while in the 1910s/20s thanks to progressive farmers who organized to wrest control back from Minneapolis bankers. ND still has a state-run bank and state-run mill

If you're in the Upper Midwest, you can also buy Dakota Maid flour, which is from the state-owned mill of North Dakota (only such one in the country!). It was established in the 1920s to stick it to the big-wig monopolists in Minneapolis

I've been for work a handful of times. While I don't get to do a ton of sight-seeing, I recommend the free (plus tip at the end) walking tours of old town Geneva. And for a relatively inexpensive meal, I'm a fan of a small local chain called Chez Ma that specializes in roasted half chickens

I cannot overstate how weird and upsetting this winter has been in Minnesota. Just 7 inches of snow *this whole season* in Minneapolis. Park ice rinks, a mainstay of winter, were open for a week or so before melting. Highs in the 40s/50s every other day. It's just...not cold. In Minnesota.
