I put an old cherry tomatoe in the ground not that long ago, thinking there's no way it'll get anywhere in autumn... I'm conflcted about this. I'm happy I've got tomatoes growing in my garden. I'm sad that it's this warm in October.
Five green cherry tomatoes on a green vine. They have just been watered so you can see droplets on them.

The book I'm currently working on is all about the 'love of reading' and the author that got me back into reading. I guess it's not gonna be for Mary Beard. For the record, I was elated after reading Kafka. It's not about the content, it's about that feeling that I read something brilliant. #booksky

The first one is so incredible, not only in terms of its writing as you say, but in terms of its practical effects too. The others that increasingly relied on CGI just cannot compare.

The reason I never liked the Jurassic Park sequels is because the first one made an incredibly strong statement that is still poignant all these years later, with Jeff Goldblum accentuating it by pointing out the lack of discipline in the science...

I have been to Stratford-upon-Avon this week to see an all male production of As You Like It, starring Jonathan Groff. Quite how many famous Shakespeare's quotes come from this play. 'All the world's a stage' which begins the seven stages of man monologue, is just one of many.

I really hate posting so much about AI. I'd much rather post about books, about writing, about literally anything else. But it has such a direct impact on me as a writer, and as a human being, and it makes me so angry I need to scream. IT'S NOT INEVITABLE STOP IT! OK I'm done for now.

I might be naive, but I'm genuinely astonished by how quickly people seem to believe we cannot live a modern life without AI. Someone has actually told me I'd have to live on a desert island to avoid AI.

All That Jazz is such a magnificent film. Roy Scheider's best performance. He's so electric. Was trying to see if I can spot Fosse himself in the audience at that incredible last number. I'm not sure I succeeded.

During the heat my reading suffered quite a blow and I barely read much. Returning to read now, I am a bit concerned by how slow I've become. It takes me about an hour to read 10 pages. It is upsetting. I read slower than an audio book. 😪

Last night I was asked if I have a favourite golem and which one is it. Interesting and more difficult question than I expected, from someone who had no idea that I wrote a whole dissertation about the golem. (He might have regretted asking when he was promptly sent a copy of my published essay...)

it's not an original thought but the idea of thousands of people wasting the single gift of a life they have been given in service of hatred, racist charlatans and AI slop will never stop depressing me

I really need to stop trying to read while in the hammock. I fall asleep immediately.
My cat Boudicat, a black and white harlequin, resting in my lap, while I'm lying in a hammock. You can only see my legs on the hammock, wearing black trousers and black shoes.

I went to see Golden Boy, a play in the Almeida starring Josh O'connor, and to my surprise also Daniel May. I was, I'm sorry to say, underwhelmed. The acting was fine, but it was a bit long, obvious, and despite the best efforts from all, emotionally uneffective.

Went to see Bad Apples yesterday. It is not a bad film with some interesting ideas, but i feel it fails to be sharp enough. As it was pointed out in a review I read, it is not funny enough or horrific enough to make a strong enough point.

Don’t use pronouns for AI. It is not a person nor ever will. Sam Altman isn’t making the god computer of his wet dream nightmares. They’ve made a shitty tool built on theft thats destroying the planet & is meant to lower human critical thinking while given military weapons by rich idiots.

Just discovered this week that a product I've been recycling for over five years at my workplace, is in fact non recyclable, despite the product stating it IS recyclable, due to contamination that is beyond our ability to control. 1/4

There's a bit of a cinematic trope when it comes to filming writers, and I don't like it. Writing is probably not the most visual of activities, so often filmmakers like to spice it up a bit with some kind of writing fever, a personification of a muse (usually a woman).

A friend texted me 'breaking news' to tell me that AI is evil. Apparently she only just discovered that in addition to all the damage to the environment and brain etc it also lies and manipulates and can kill us. 🙄

Apparently Tom Thumb is the first known fairy tale printed in English. There seem to be a lot of similarities with Pinnochio, which was written 200 years later. #booksky

I visited the National Museum of Film and Sci Fi in Milton Keynes. It's a wonderful place full of curiosities, from Arthur C Clark's genuine typewriter, to 1979 genuine Muppets (not the ones in this pic). Only limited photography is allowed. Excellent place to visit.
Pausing in front of the Muppets band, pretending to drum. Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayham. From left to right, Dr Teeth, fm green and orange puppet, missing a tooth, on keyboard, Janice, orange puppet with yellow hair and large eyelashes, on guitar and singing, Animal, red hairy monster, on drums, Zoot, blue puppet with blue hair, on Saxophone. Floyd, purple puppet with orange hair, on guitar also singing.

I spent most of yesterday cleaning the house and doing stuff just so I'll have a quiet day today to try and get back to my writing after a long social/ life break, only to get bogged down with a malfunctioning keyboard, spilling water everywhere, and general annoyance. #realisticwritinglife #writing

It's Star Trek's 60th anniversary today. It is becoming harder to make such optimistic [wroke] sci fi these days when the world is literally on fire and we couldn't be farther away from Rodenberry's naive vision. But it's nice to think about. I love Star Trek.

Started watching Ludwig recently and I'm enjoying it very much. I'm always impressed with writers who can come up with a good murder mystery regularly. It seem like a hard thing to do.

There are far too many battles in the LotR films! They becomes exhausting and meaningless! I'd have cut most of the battles and brought in The Scouring of the Shire to the films instead, which is a most vital part of the story.

I saw some people on Tiktok suggesting to give your inner critic the voice of a man or someone you don't like. I did it for a day and immediately thought I was letting people I dislike too much in my head, and now they're criticising me.

Sometimes I read something, as part of a research, that gets me so excited, I want to go to everyone I know and give them a a profound lecture about why this thing I read is so amazing, while holding them by the shoulder. Unfortunately, it's often hard to explain my excitement without context.
