Watching Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio with fam this weekend & 11yr old, deep in thought as the end credits roll, "So in the end, we're all just pinecones..."

In Italy 2 summers ago, stopping for a slice of pizza & then 8yr old got excited to see pineapple, only to be utterly confused & disgusted when told it was in fact potato, not pineapple.

Bought some Lays chips at the local collectibles store with the kids yesterday. Google translate was ever so helpful with the Spicy Spicy Pleasure Flavor.

Screenshot of Google translating a bag of Lays potato chips. The translation reads, "Pleasure," in one section and "Spicy spicy flavor," in another.
The bag is dark red with a bowl of chili save and a spoon in the sauce.

Also in the papaya tastes like vomit camp, & had to search what a cherimoya was only to realize it's also called a custard apple. My Yaya used to grow so many of them she'd sell the extras to the local grocery store, along with okra & who knows what else!

The thing both menus are missing is all the staples they assume people readily have or can afford. Where's the butter, oil, the eggs, the heavy cream, the milk, the sugar, the seasonings & spices needed to assemble & cook all this food out of homogenous blandness? That's a lot more $.

Thing 1 & 2 decided on dressing up as the Knight & Hornet this year which meant mama had to make the Nail & (make it rusty!) Needle in a matter of days. So much EVA foam scraps & dust everywhere. #hollowknight #silksong #knight #hornet #halloween

Two young humans dressed up as the Knight and Hornet from the Hollow Knight video game.
The 1st is wearing a red cloak with a white mask that has 2 pointed curved almost horn-like peaks and then rapers down to a narrow chin. The eye holes are slanted and there are no other distinguishing facial features. They're holding a prop sword that looks like a long pointed needle that has rusted heavily.
The 2nd is draped in a gray cloak and their white mask is more rounded than the other. Horn-like protusions are shorter & curve inward. One looks shorter then the other as if it has been broken. They also hold a prop sword, this one shaped more like a sword but with swirling, twisted patterns on the blade.
They both stand on the edge of a concrete driveway in a suburban neighborhood, trees and houses lining the street behind then while the sky turns orange with the setting sun.

My favorite thing about fireflies is their wink of light in the cupped hands of children, a glimpse into a world of magic.

A short haired, black and white tuxedo cat with yellow eyes and four black spots on his pink nose. He sits on a white chair at a dinner table covered with a blue and orange plaid patterned tablecloth with ears perked up and an intense look off to camera right. The edge of a silver charger is just visible to one side.

Nom, nom! A short haired, black and white tuxedo cat with yellow eyes and four black spots on his pink nose. He sits at the dinner table with a silver dinner plate charger in front of him, his tongue sticking out to taste a small piece of grilled lamb, seasoned in olive oil, garlic, kosher salt & fresh rosemary.

Hat tip to Paul Conway

A humorous political letter styled as a formal diplomatic communication from “The Sovereign Authority of Heard Island” addressed to then-President Donald J. Trump and the U.S. government. The letter playfully critiques a supposed 10% tariff on exports from Heard Island—a remote, uninhabited territory in the Southern Ocean populated only by glaciers, penguins, and seabirds.

The tone is dry and satirical, listing “chief exports” like:

Penguin chatter, described as priceless but hard to monetize.

Glacial ice, noted as potentially valuable, but assumed to be freely melting.

Volcanic rocks, humorously said to move only if relocated by an ambitious albatross.

The letter mock-requests clarification on how tariffs apply to penguin squawks or visiting krill, and whether elephant seals need to file tax returns.

It closes with a counter-offer: if the U.S. waives the tariff, Heard Island promises not to retaliate with a 10% tax on the very occasional American tourist or overcharge scientists studying penguins. The sign-off is from "The Sovereign Authority of Heard Island (Represented by the Official Penguin Delegation)" and ends with the pun “With glacial regards.”

The overall style mimics diplomatic language while delivering absurdist humor rooted in the remote absurdity of the setting.

My dad was a protesting, marching, striking union coal miner for 20+ years in Australia. When he suffered a non work place injury, he got a year's worth of accrued sick leave, then planted trees across mined out pits until retirement. I'd hate to think if he'd been in the US.

Sometimes I like to imagine the clouds are snow capped mountains, glimpsed through the Veil. #lifeunscripted #photography #landscape

Dark, mountain-like clouds gather on the horizon, the tops lit white and gold by the eastern rising sun.
Bare branched trees are scattered in the distance, beyond a rain soaked field turned winter gold. In the foreground, a glimpse of wet tarmac, the back of a road sign, a utility pole and powerlines are visible.
