The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

NEW: Mike Rogers is campaigning against Abdul el-Sayed based on what el-Sayed supporter Hasan Piker has said. But who's looking at the anti-American radicals supporting Rogers? They’re not hard to find. I found some because I’ve already reported on them.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

The idea that classrooms are chiefly spaces for product testing, and that it is irresponsible pedagogy not to enforce this, is both cynical and vile, and “fuck off” is a cogent response from any professional educator to any non-teaching salescreep or tech-but-not-subject-matter expert who voices it.

We are told that humanities majors are dropping; hence universities don’t hire tenure line humanities faculty. Yet, computer science has lost colossal #s of majors; by the logic applied to humanities, one would expect a corresponding drop in tenure-line positions. But is this happening?

Suspicious of this. It sounds like grading is being reduced to a checklist rather than an evaluation of student work. Sure, it's great if a student cited 12 articles in an assignment, but did they demonstrate that they understood those articles and how they fit together?

This passage citing the work of Jonathan Haidt in the Yale Report is instructive. For a group pushing "intellectual pluralism," it is notable that it doesn't mention the widespread criticism of the book, such as the reviewer in Nature who bluntly said his argument "is not supported by science."
In the fall of 2025, NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt visited Yale as a Presidential Lecturer and presented the research behind his book The Anxious Generation, which documents the effects of smartphones and social media on adolescent mental health, attention, and social development. Haidt’s visit helped to inspire a conversation among faculty and students about the fundamental shift that has taken place in the relationship between technology and learning.47

The Yale report on trust in higher education has some good recommendations for reforms in many areas that I hope Yale and other schools implement. But its diagnosis is oddly silent about what I suspect is the most important force driving the decline in trust in higher education: political attack.

Sometimes I think about how antagonists are treated in movies and TV shows. How they often never face any legal consequences but are rather killed or die in some karmic way. And how that trains us to expect consequences will just happen to the unjust instead of being imposed through elections or law

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

You're literally both sides-ing an armed occupation of an American city and the murder of innocent people by agents of the state. Both sides don't need to back down, ICE/CBP/DHS need to get the fuck out Mnpl and every other city they're in.
