Me long tired and wary of Messi/Ronaldo comparisons, also me not being able to deny that it says tons where each are and are being treated in this international window.

People suprised by the unfit playing surface at Townsville last night for #AusVBra is a sign they don't follow football here too closely. I've no plans to attend Roar games at Suncorp this year mainly due to the substandard playing surface that often negatively impacts the quality of play.

It's both, IMO. Having a place to feel a human connection is enormous for many, esp those who live alone & WFH. A subset of those fall prey to the algo and it can get bad fast. I notice the addictive built-in properties do the same to me. Agree, it will never equal life happening IRL= da best!

So let me guess, the NBA's "negotation" with the Clippers was basically telling them that they couldn't really afford an unholy stoush with the players association and trying to convince them to take just about all punishment instead, with threats of it being worse than this to get it over the line?

Still can't watch this game, but the stuff around it (somewhat morbidly) grabs me. I've seen the post-game bit with JW in which he breaks down, but not this after the ad break to finish it. What a mindfuck of a sliding door.

Watching old stuff because fuck what the PL currently is (on+off-field). The best of 4-4-F-2, not really being 4-4-F-2: LW Giggs inside and linking with RW Beckham, CMs Keane and Butt getting forward, LB Irwin in their deeper CM area, CF Cantona at LW, a poaching 9 Cole drifting off and assisting.

Glad LeBron didn’t go back to the Cavs again (if he was to, the time was a year or two ago, not now with Harden eating up things in more ways than one and losing come the crunch even more ingrained). Logical as this is for 🏀 🏆 , though, I must admit preferring the plain 🍿 of him at GSW’s uncville.

"The scourge of modern club football is the obsession with pressing ... Between two technically skilled sides, it can create high-tempo, thrilling football. The problem is that, over the past decade, pressing has stopped being considered an add-on and become the primary objective for many sides." 🎯

Not at all a surprising outcome, but I'm still laughing at Tuchel thinking the answer was to chuck on even more defenders while he couldn't care less about making any use in this WC (when it mattered) of the likes of Mainoo and Wharton to get a grip in midfield. #ENGARG

Good riddance to what is secretly unrefined and cowardly rubbish. As alluring as that front four is, the hype over this French team was always rather ignorant of basic team balance and TnT adaptability. It's like the last WC final (well, first 75 mins) never happened. #FRAESP

What a great piece by Sam. At this point, I'm so tired of hearing an Asian federation saying they want to develop a plan to qualify World Cup, only to then fumble that plan every 4 years, and then say they need a new plan. This is not just a problem for Australia, but for most of Asia.

Beyond this graphic triggering me re: Tomislav Ivić's career... A good if (understandably) still imperfect job getting the 2018 cycle on track when parachuted in, then a lot of deeply frustrating utilisation and (avoided) team rebuilding since then, masked by a very flaky 2022 3rd-place campaign.

Still lamenting this for Colombia. For the other 2024 Copa finalist with a ~50m population and an old but legendary 10 with a lot of current starters retired/over 30 come the next WC, they've cashed in this decade regardless of this WC. Colombia really haven't, despite improving in this cycle.

Just for funsies cause I'm a data nerd and I'm curious. The conversion rate for centre-backs after 4 penalty shootouts so far this #WorldCup is very low (40%), while attacking midfielders and wingers are leading the way for penalties converted in a shootout (80% both).
