theres also the issue of your pokedex being completely empty at the start of the game (as if no one has done any research in the region) but catching a pokemon gives you info you couldnt possibly know (like every encounter location) its less like an encyclopedia and more like a logbook

no pokemon game has really scratched my itch of actually researching pokemon PLA didnt do anything for me because you just catch pokemon and their data automatically fills in, just like every other game. if i catch a pokemon no ones ever seen before i shouldnt immediately know its type

like where is two player mario & luigi??? come on!! echoes of wisdoms big development problem was "how do we make players prioritise echoes over swordplay" and the answer they failed to see was to make a co-op game where player 1 is zelda controlling echoes and player 2 is link.

how many first party nintendo titles let you hand a controller to player 2 from the start of the game, giving them the same breadth of experience. mario wonder? not controlling marios hat. not unlocking gooigi a few hours in. not bandana dee unable to interact with the games central gimmick.

something thats baffled me is that the switch era continuing into the switch 2 era was supposed to promote local co-op, with the whole "split your controller in two and pass it to a friend!" thing but nintendo never truly experimented in hazelights niche of splitscreen co-op games

Despite all of this, its difficult to fundamentally mess up a final remix. As much as Remix 20 does wrong, its not unplayable garbage or whatever. It wasnt enough to ruin Rhythm Heaven Groove for me, but Remix 20 was an unsatisfying ending to something decent. Kind of like this review, I suppose.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Past final remixes tended to use setpieces from particular rhythm games to break up the visuals, since they couldnt use a theme. But for Remix 20? There are no stock photos, no objects blocking your view, no dramatic zoom-ins or zoom-outs, no special effects. Every rhythm game is bland and basic.

Fruit Flex doesnt have its lemon cue, Lightning Bolting 2 doesnt use its second cue. Its all a mess. Its one thing to mix up original graphics with sequel music. But you should use the cues designed for the music you picked! Weirdly, Hoop Trundling is the only game to use a brand new cue.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Too many rhythm games dont use their cues, not even in a sense of A for Effort having 5 cues that you couldnt possibly all use, rather the MAIN CUE of the rhythm game is absent for no reason! What sets Soda Hop apart is the offbeat cue! And you should know how I feel about Sweeper Star.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Disc Dog being the 8th rhythm game is a baffling choice that completely kills the momentum of the remix, and it doesnt fully recover until 6 from the end with Can Do 2. Its as close a feeling to motion sickness that music can give you, with how much the tension bounces up and down throughout.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Most rhythm games here either have poor arrangements, chose the wrong song to arrange or simply just chose the wrong section to arrange! Remix 20 is 90% bridges, but even then it struggles to flow smoothly from rhythm game to game. The only good segue was Germ Aerobics to High-Five Fever 2.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Not only was Brolly Good Show was a bad choice for Remix 20, it and 14 of the 30 other rhythm games present for whatever reason got jumbled up between their original visuals and sequel music. Brolly Good Shows arrangement is too light-hearted and soft compared to the original, and it ends abruptly.

Anyone who argues that its supposed to be like Tengoku Remix 6 (which is why it is good) is crazy. Remix 6 was Tengokus 36th rhythm game, and NOT its final remix. Tengoku Remix 6 also just straight up had better pacing, and a better choice of final rhythm game in Space Dance!

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I feel bad that this is the final review in the series... but Remix 20 is just so unsatisfyingly average. Rhythm Heaven Groove pays homage to Rhythm Tengoku above all else, and it does it poorly with regards to Remix 20. Why does the second longest game have the easiest final remix!

As a group, these remixes were disappointing compared to the previous four games. Remix 19 is among the few that actually "remix" the rhythm games together, but is among the majority that dont have a theme. Its a shame to see 70% of the remixes clustered at the very bottom of the tierlist.
000
hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Slice N Dice Kitchens usage alone marked it down a point. It works completely different here than in the rest of the game, the bell peppers come a beat sooner, and its really cruel to put at the very end of the remix. Remix 19 is fittingly the hardest remix in Groove, but it shouldnt be unfair.
100
hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It hurt to mark Remix 19 down... its my personal favourite remix but it just repeats Remix 18s mistakes. The start and end are incredible, some of the best gameplay in the whole series, but 18 rhythm games is too much for one remix and the music and gameplay falls apart as it progresses.

in spite of this non-chalantness, this game has a lot of thought put into its dialogue and characterization otherwise theres a trainer that only aggros from 1 tile away andtakes a single step before explaining that hes a little tired theres also a misogynist npc for some reason

gen V has the most "yeah we both know this is arbitrary, deal with it" roadblocks in the series and i kinda love it like wtf am i looking at here. WRONG GENERATION ASSHOLE theres random traffic cones that disappear at arbitrary points in relic castle a guys like "its too sandy i cant let you in"

This remix also just falls apart as it goes on. The rhythm games dont flow with eachother well and they dont really sync to the music. Its not a very cohesive experience beyond the first 30 seconds. The almost silent Disc Dog cue at the end is nice though.
000
hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This remix does good by finally having Disc Dog interruptions without overt tutorialization, but it tees up the lone interruption for too long, and it only happens once in the first section. What is up with Groove remixes and forgetting games? Disc Dog should appear throughout the whole remix.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Remix 18 is poorly executed. For one, the silhouette theme is decent here, but a worse than in Remix 8. I dislike that the theme fades in, the early transitions between Disc Dog and Hop N Slide are a little nauseating, and it creates an ugly flashbang effect. Disc Dog is not black and white!

what if there were a pokemon held item, sort of in the same vein as eviolite, that reverts a fully evolved pokemon to its pre-evolutions type normal/fairy azumarill, rock/ground tyranitar, psychic/fairy gallade etc call it prototite?

usage tiers are infinitely more fair and effective than target bans i think its equally never gonna happen in the game itself (even though theres technically precedent) but at least youll know if your one weapon will be legal beforehand

Spirit Slasher is a great opener that makes it extremely obvious that the music is swung, but opening with Spirit Slasher means you shouldnt overlap too much with other remixes that utilise it... and they did. Swung Can Do, though, is an abomination. Easily the most uncomfortable cue in the game.
000
hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The choices of rhythm game were also weird. This is a swing remix to accommodate Lightning Bolting (even though that game works fine adapted to a straight rhythm), but Quick Hands is unchanged and High-Five Fever is too fast-paced for the swing to matter much.
100
hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Spirit Slasher... Quick Hands... High-Fiver Fever... wait a minute! This is just Remix 12 but swung! I have two big issues (other than the theme). There are too few rhythm games used here, only 30% of remixes get to have more than four, you gotta make it count. Five was not enough.

windblight was very badly designed, but at least you had activate airtime from stationary gusts of wind, and manage your stamina bar you get infinite stamina against colgera and can activate airtime anywhere! and you can activate it out of a jump against mucktorok, who cant hit you midair!

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
ok I lied it turns out i do want to liveblog TOTK criticism 4 years late windblight ganon was inarguably BOTWs worst dungeon boss, because readily available airtime trivialises combat but in TOTK, they gave you infinite free airtime against two dungeon bosses

for me there were like 30 people in line at midnight for the switch 2 and recently, double that for wolverine, in the middle of the day for some reason but for games like rhythm heaven and tomodachi life, i was one of the only preorders at my local store : (

Otherwise, the realism theme was executed perfectly. I especially love how some rhythm games were positioned differently to accommodate for the scene! This is the most technically different a remix has ever been. But in the end the music and gameplay are all just fine.

hippo @hippoqueenv.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Remix 16 works well as a row 1 remix. The first rhythm game in every column should be relatively easy, and Remix 16 eases you into a column comprised entirely of remixes. Its just way too short and ends abruptly. Regardless of the slow tempo, the next remixes average over a minute longer!

I think I understated the wasting materials part too. you need to constantly spend monster parts and gemstones to engage with the game properly, so you will almost never have enough to spend on upgrades without grinding. I dont think i could come up with a more pointless gameplay system if i tried

all the movement armors (climb speed, swim speed, slip resistance, skydive speed, sand speed, snow speed) are inferior to constructs. you dont need to upgrade utility sets like stealth up and battery up. and there are a dozen gimmick armor sets. there are 4 sets worth upgrading out of 135 armors.
