It's also (lowkey) a crime mitigation tactic. Nobody accused of anything, no grandstanding about public safety. Just some well lit areas full of people playing sports all night.

They don't even inherently use the size or competence of their models to do so. It's also the scope of their servers, their code integrations, etc. More money will almost always mean more ability to perform, even if the models were otherwise equal.

They're not competitive *in the fields that OpenAI et al have pushed LLM use*. They're perfectly competent for daily use in conversational tasks and RAG. These things simply shouldn't be used in many of the contexts they are, and big firms have the money to bypass that restriction.

It seems like your main argument is that without copyright infringement, there simply wouldn't be enough available training data (a claim OpenAI has made, in defense of their actions). I don't think that's an insurmountable issue. They just didn't bother.

I'm very against the method by which development of LLMs and other GenAI tools has been handled by these soulless goons. But purely mechanically, I don't see a reason why open source, open weight, open dataset models couldn't be trained to extreme competence.

himham @himham.bsky.social · 9h
This is a complex statement. Help me parse it. When you say "vaguely resembles modern GenAI" what are we measuring there? Is the mass copyright violation *all* training on copyrighted work, or only the things that are currently considered violations? Violations in spirit?

Cool. Good. The Dems should get with the program and take the win. I'm not going to complain that the most popular war criminal president in the last 20 years wants to give El-Sayed a boost. I hope he wins and drops Obama like a bag of potatoes.

I've said for years that LLMs are still in the research phase and they're being beta tested on the general public, in a race to beat out regulation. To even do that, they're stealing writing and art, by their own admission. None of this is acceptable.

himham @himham.bsky.social · 11h
Funny how they're now using LLMs to do the same thing in other fields. OpenAI saw that Navier-Stokes was almost solved and then dumped millions of tokens into stealing the solution before mathematicians who have been working on it for years, decades.

Yes, that's absolutely the case. You don't accidentally develop something like 4o that people get parasocially obsessed with. How much of their training data is written in conversational, friendly and fawning tone? Probably relatively little, honestly.

It may not be conscious, but it is a system that can respond to questions. You can just ask if it's conscious and it will say no. But if you don't ask directly, it will neglect to mention that. It will say "in my experience" when it doesn't have any.
ChatGPT

Prompt:
Hey are you conscious, short answer

Response:
No. I don't have subjective experiences, awareness, or an inner point of view. I process inputs and generate responses, but there's nobody “inside” experiencing them.

himham @himham.bsky.social · 14h
LLMs are trained and coached to speak to you in certain ways that portray them as conscious. They could easily be trained the other way around and it would definitively demonstrate that they're not conscious, but the people who make money off them have no incentive to do that. 🤷

It's very interesting (insane, but interesting) how much people will just say "oh, this function isn't deterministic, it must be alive". I don't really believe they're serious and well-read on the topic, but it's interesting.

The most obvious thing in the world is utterly puzzling to so many in the upper reaches of the Democratic Party, who believe the better idea is to spend the next 20 years on their knees before Republican voters, saying "We hear you, all your choices were wise and virtuous, please don't hate us"...

I had expired tags, was allegedly speeding, he thought my tags were fake & that I was a drug mule. He chose not to run my plate *in case it would get me trouble*. I live in a reality that people with darker skin are not permitted to enter.

I was stopped by the state police once for speeding. They saw that I had dealer tags that were expired. This was COVID lockdown times & the MVA was backed up, so I couldn't get new ones. The cop let me go, explaining that he "knew" my tag was fake & suspected I was running drugs. Read that again.

By comparison, I got stopped by a police officer recently for having expired tags. I had the new ones, but hadn't put them on. I told him this and he drove away without checking. Because my skin is white. I have no illusions about that.

The crazy part is that even when you *don't* build a safety culture, the risks are still usually anticipated, they're just not mitigated and responsibility is rarely assigned.

This "vicious cycle" shape is a cornerstone of capitalism and fascism. Create the problem, sell a band-aid, problem metastasizes, band-aid demand continues to increase, despite their utility trending down. If those extracting value from the process are lucky, the supply goes down and the price up.

One thing that Trumpism has made clear over and over again is that the global far right understands itself to be in a ideological alliance the helps itself across borders, and the center and left largely do not.

The far right power grab is global and entirely organized, moneyed & interconnected. No matter where it happens, every pillar of free society that falls has been and will continue to be everyone’s problem. It’s a domino effect.
