"And do you have any further plan than fleeing as far as you can? Where will you live? More importantly, how will you make a living? Because without knowing that you certainly will starve in some gutter."

Steve had not thought of that. He has been so focused on escaping, he did not truly think about his destination. But he can't say that. Can't admit to his foolishness. Instead, he turns his attention to his meal, eating with enough gusto that Mr. Munson follows suit.

The silence that settles between them is still companionable rather than oppressive, and Mr. Munson keeps glancing at Steve with the softest expression of curiosity that he has ever seen. With deliberate delicacy, Steve sets down his knife and fork, and softly says, “I always hoped I would be allowed to marry for love… But now I think friendship may be the truest blessing to a marriage.”

"Yes," Eddie husks, giving Steve's waist a squeeze and stepping from his grasp, not bothering to look back because he knows Steve will follow. He leads them to the castle's chapel and into a private alcove. "This is where I go when I wish to be alone at night, no one but our Lord to keep me company." Eddie points to the crucifix upon the wall, a beautifully carved reminder of Christ's suffering for their sins. "But you must keep quiet, Sweetling. You would not wish to wake Father Martin."
