Thrilled to be joining the Department of Government at @georgetownuni.bsky.social this fall as the FLAD Visiting Professor, where I'll be teaching a seminar on Youth and Politics. Grateful to FLAD for making this possible. Let's go, Hoyas.

Political parties talk a lot about ethics. But how well do they actually regulate themselves? Luís de Sousa, Fernando Casal Bértoa, Lúcio Hanenberg and I develop a measure of the robustness of party ethics self-regulation across 241 parties in 34 countries.

Happy to be at #EPSS2026 in Belfast today. I'm chairing panel PP03 — four papers on youth wings as recruitment grounds and early arenas where patterns of political representation take shape. Drop by if you're around! 🕞 15:20–17:00 · Meeting Room 3a (ICC).

Politics is often said to need renewal. But where do young politicians get elected, and where does the door start to close? Patrícia and I look at this question in Portugal. Young people are not absent from politics. But the path becomes much narrower as offices become more executive and national.

But past ties leave traces: switchers from the left feel warmer toward left parties/leaders and colder toward the right; ex-right switchers show the reverse.

Yet this does not appear to threaten intra-party cohesion. Switchers and first-timers look more alike than different on left-right and core PRR attitudes. When differences do show up, they mostly reflect where switchers came from (left vs. right), rather than switching per se.

About 1 in 4 Chega members are switchers (~25%). Most came from the right (82.4%), especially PSD and CDS-PP. A non-trivial minority came from the left (17.6%).

While mainstream parties have been losing members for decades, populist radical right (PRR) parties keep expanding their grassroots. Is that growth driven mostly by political “newcomers,” or also by former members of other parties? And do these groups differ on core PRR traits?

I may be wrong – and I’m by no means defending APSR – but I do think a similar decision was made in this case. Not sure, though. In any case, the editors should publish the two pieces simultaneously.

This debate brought me back to a great replication course I took in 2023 with @simonhix.bsky.social at @eui-eu.bsky.social. I’m learning a lot from both sides. Critique is welcome -- what we should avoid is turning disagreements into attacks on authors.

#EPSA2025 has just started! Excited to be at @uc3m.es presenting my research on how party and youth wing members balance policy against vote-seeking considerations.

I’m the one thanking you! Pleased to see my name in the EJPR for the first time alongside yours and this team! 🥳 Since I’m out of wine, I’ll raise a toast with the last little treat I brought back from Italy! 🍋 Obrigado, Duncan!

Happy that our article is now available online at the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties. Marco Lisi and I delve into the reasons why party members vote for a different party at the ballot box. The manuscript is available here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
