Another endangered orca, J31, has been on a ‘tour of grief,’ carrying a dead baby orca around, researchers revealed last night at Seattle’s Town Hall. The 31-year-old mom has had several miscarriages and did a similar tour in 2016. More details coming today from @whaleresearch.bsky.social. #srkw

At the Friday Harbor lab, I learned the Samish Indian Nation—a tribe that has no reservation or fishing rights and reveres a kelp goddess—would be helping release lab-raised stars into the wild. I thought, “I want to be there for that.”

Or perhaps Lucy got excited, hoping to hear me on the national @npr.org airwaves today. I'll have a fun story on this astounding creature--the sunflower star--and a tribe's work to bring the apex predator back to kelp forests in WA's San Juan Islands. Airing 4:50 or 5:50pm on your local NPR station.

But sunflower stars are apex predators of West Coast kelp beds. The 24-armed beasts' near-demise has led to many kelp forests being stripped bare by their proliferating prey (sea urchins). (Willem Weertman pics)

I believe it was my first time interviewing somebody in the Gulf of Alaska (fishing about 10 miles off Yakutat) 🌊. His boat, the Barbra B (misspelled above, sorry) has a Starlink connection for access to all the latest weather data--and the occasional call from a reporter in Seattle.

I was pleased to get a hold of Dungeness crab fisherman Joseph Veitenhans. We spoke while he was 10 miles offshore in the Gulf of Alaska, longlining for halibut aboard the F/V Barbara B.
Washington fisherman Joseph Veitenhans discovered the buoys—or “cans,” as he calls them—were no longer relaying data on ocean conditions in January, when he took his boat out from Westport. It was the start of Dungeness crab season, Washington’s most valuable commercial fishery, hauling up about $80 million of the bright red bottom dwellers annually.

“It's through the winter, the worst time to be on the ocean, which is why the cans are kind of crucial,” he said. “Any time I leave Westport, I'm checking those cans.”

Veitenhans said, at first, he wasn’t sure if the buoys were just malfunctioning. He wrote researchers to find out when the cans would be back online and was disappointed to learn they’d been eliminated.

"There's a lot of other people in the Westport crab fleet who rely on these cans for their crew and their safety when they're going out and doing this fishery,” Veitenhans said from his boat while fishing for halibut in the Gulf of Alaska.
