Why do you take no responsibility for that behavior turning off the voters it is now your job to retain? Why do you not spend your time finding other people treating a vulnerable group like that and convincing them to fucking stop?

I looked at the electricity cost to charge an EV at my home and I’m guessing my next vehicle will be a hybrid, not an EV. I can’t imagine how high the cost would be for people who live in places that don’t cap rates like my utility does.

Every time I hear of some Dem candidate calling for bans on gender-affirming care for minors, I immediately want them to lose because there’s no way someone that gullible should become a governor or senator.

I am so fucking tired of the daily ‘should trans people be allowed to exist’ argument. The vast majority of society dgaf about us until democrats and republicans alike decided to turn us into their niche culture war issue after people like Jesse Singal and JKR decided we needed to be eradicated.

I just saw someone admonishing someone trans to shut up about trans rights because there are concentration camps in the US, and you know who I see overwhelmingly and disproportionately on the front lines standing up against concentration camps? Trans people.

One of my favorite pieces of lore is that they found the Unabomber by recognizing something he’d said in his published manifesto. “You can’t eat your cake and have it too.” His SIL recognized it because he’d always insisted that was the correct way. He was right though. It was the right way.

Reminds me of what the English did to Ireland and Scotland, or what the US and Canada did to American tribes. Trying to erase culture tends to backfire, and I hope it does for this administration too. Wherever they go, I hope one of their socks is a little too wet and they don’t know why.

Tried and failed to overturn fair maps. Utah’s congressional districts are all new and feature one district that leans heavily Dem. GOP Supermajority in the state legislature voted to pack the Utah supreme court, since it was the court that stopped them.

Utah has had mail-in voting as the default for more than a decade. As such, there are far fewer in-person polling places. That infrastructure doesn’t just pop out of nowhere.

As horrible as it’s been to go through, it does feel a little like that scene in The Two Towers when Gandalf says “The Ents are going to wake up and find that they are strong.” Good on you all for standing firm against the terrifying ridiculousness of this administration.

She could even just have sat in her moldering castle with her bigoted viewpoints and still been a beloved children’s author, but she had to be the center of attention. I’m convinced that her vocal anti-trans bigotry started as a desperate ploy to retain relevance and backfired.

When I was a kid, a girl in my town was hit by a car going ~45 mph. But because she was wearing a helmet, she was back to school a couple months later instead of dead.

Someone on Reddit asked why “9 to 5” was the phrasing, when everyone we know works much longer hours and always has. The answer was less about hours and more about symbolism, feminism, and the fight for equality. I miss Dolly.

I think another lesson to take from the loss of both Dolly and Tim Curry is that neither of them took themselves seriously but they took the work dead serious that's the most important thing pour all of yourself into the craft but have fun and don't get an ego.

I grew up in a town that was sparsely developed with a lot of small farms. Few streetlights. It blows my kids away that what I saw at night is much closer to this image than the view from my parents’ house now. (Same house, much more developed street)

The will is probably the stickiest part, for sure. It’s easy for politicians and institution heads to throw up their hands and say nothing can be done when they aren’t the ones dying. (See: Americans vastly in favor of gun control, but not the government)

Yes, despite what for many was crushing poverty and life surrounded by 600+km of wilderness on all sides. I don’t think Americans say it can be done to take the piss. I think it’s more to instill hope in a livable, sustainable future where thousands of people don’t have to die every heat wave.

There’s something about this I don’t understand. Where I live, summers are typically hotter and winters colder than most of Europe. The homes built in the 19th/early 20th Century here had no aircon at first, but have been retrofit to have it for decades now. Why is that not an option in Europe?

There’s that scene in Downton Abbey where Lady Mary criticizes Charles Blake for not being sympathetic to the wealthy landowners floundering after WWI. She says he has to understand what they’re used to, and he says no, they have to understand it’s time to get used to something else.

I live very close to a bed of toxic dust covered by a very thin layer of water that is decreasing nearly every year. The idea that the toxic dust could kill a million or so people downwind is moving even the most stodgy of Republicans to act. How many dead people does it take for Europe to act?

The problem is, as you say, that too many people think they shouldn’t have had to. The US has its own issues with nostalgia killing people, but at least we can acknowledge that it is an issue.

But also the arguments against lack of infrastructure are painfully thin. Most homes in the UK are 50-100 years old. Nearly every home in my region (Utah) of that vintage has AC, and most from the 19th century as well. It’s not livable otherwise.

Oh, hey, more research on thermal mass. In most places, it’s somewhere between useless and counterproductive for energy efficiency. If you’re in a place with big DAILY temp swings (Say, a desert with 95° days & 50°nights), thermal mass IS your friend because you use the thermal mass as a buffer.

I think the treatment was probably similar, with the unfortunate caveat that so many were drafted instead of choosing to serve. Plus all the societal factors that made disability and mental illness more marginalizing then than they are now.
