there is one "true seal" in the back, looks like a harbour seal. honorable mention to the "fur seal" with its foot up in front row. in any case, otariidae would be a better fit for the role anyway since they can walk, run and climb, unlike true seals.

Apparently there's a HUGE backup of JAZ drives that were recently put on the Internet Archive. One of them (at least) includes the original Maya 3D models used in the The Iron Giant.

not clear what they were doing in the lead up to this, but the car must have backed into the one bollard pretty hard while turning, causing the front to skid into and lodge behind the other.

ngl, everything about this kind of sucks imo. this doesn't seem to be a very complete representation of the case either. what was even made? looks like it was mostly crude plastic handgun frames. not clear why the long guns and scopes are shown. to look scary? 38 legal guns is quite a bit tho lol

I think it's interesting that he understands so little about what he's supposedly good at; "today's computers" do not have "hundreds of trillions of transistors in them" unless we're talking whole datacenters since nvidia's biggest consumer GPU, the 5090, has only 0.092 trillion transistors.

I love you AP Stylebook, Anthropologist here, and you can anthropomorphize an inanimate object, but as it turns out, humans are not special, and all the studies show animals make tools, houses, communicate, create, and have culture. I am writing a whole book on traits. Animals have them all.

Nobody is saying that clocks should be messed with twice yearly, and they shouldn't, we're saying that keeping them wrong by about an hour forever is a bad idea. and I don't recall seeing a vote about keeping standard time vs DST, only discussion about whether changing the clocks should continue.

the amount of lift rouge would have to generate to sustain that is absurd. she can probably pull 50G turns in flight with that kind of power. for reference, 3-5Gs is enough to cause loss of consciousness, and trained pilots with pressure suits can manage 9-10 for short periods at a time.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

looks to me like only Jupiter is in sharp focus; at higher res the moon looks a bit soft but the whole image was sharpened. also this appears to be cropped. and the optics are a 9.25" aperture Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope, 2350mm f/10.

HOLY SHIT DUDES fucking with the environment is now not just a sin (which Francis also said), it is classed as a direct fuck-you to God and a central tenet of the reasoning is the need to care for "our common home," i.e. you are morally obligated to think about the other people who also live here
