I really enjoy teaching these things and hearing students' reactions. The Sixties student movement offered a bracing critique of the academy and their fellow students -- but also had great hope in the ability to remake the university and use it as a site of social change.

This week in my Sixties class I taught SDS's Port Huron Statement (1962) and the Berkeley Free Speech Movement (1964). What students wrote then about the complicity of university administrators in social evils and the need for reform rings true today. Looking at you, Cornell.

So far so there's no actual plot reason for the burger restaurant owner to be bigfoot and not just a regular guy, I guess they just wanted to get their money's worth on the costume

They say they hate “wokeness,” but what they really hate is empathy. Because once you start caring about other people’s experiences, inequalities become harder to ignore, and privilege becomes harder to defend.

It's so hard not to despair reading the news. I used to think we could change the world. Now, it feels like all we can hope for is the Dems winning the midterms to put a check on fascism. Is this me getting more conservative as I get older? Maybe. It feels more like losing hope.

"Nationalism is a reactionary current in the national liberation struggle, a reactionary current that simply cannot deliver any meaningful freedom for the working class and peasantry of the oppressed nationality." - Lucien van der Walt theanarchistlibrary.org/library/alfr...
Nationalism versus National Liberation

What these reactionary currents all share is the ideology of nationalism: the ideology that maintains that class struggle is irrelevant, that oppressed workers and peasants must join hands with their “own” exploiters and aspirant exploiters, to establish a national capitalism and national State. Their aim is “national independence,” meaning that “local” capitalists will replace “foreign” capitalists, “local” generals the “foreign” generals, “local” government officials the “foreign” officials.

Nationalism is a reactionary current in the national liberation struggle, a reactionary current that simply cannot deliver any meaningful freedom for the working class and peasantry of the oppressed nationality. Nationalism is a reactionary current that sacrifices the masses on the altar of the elite.

As Bakunin said, national liberation must be achieved “as much in the economic as in the political interests of the masses.” If the struggle is taken over by “ambitious intent to set up a powerful State” and “carried out without the people,” it will become hijacked by the “privileged class” and degenerate into a “retrogressive, disastrous, counter-revolutionary movement.”

Spotted this truck being gay and spooky today 🌈 🎃
A cyclist wearing a white helmet, high-visibility yellow jacket, dark clothing, and a backpack rides past a white refrigerated delivery truck at a street intersection. The truck has colorful Woolworths branding in a rainbow style and the words "we're proud"

There is a Halloween skeleton decoration is visible sitting in the passenger seat. A large yellow pedestrian crossing pole stands prominently in the foreground, partially obscuring the cyclist and truck.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a woman pushing a shopping cart into a grocery store. In the baby seat of the shopping cart is an unusual orange creature with a trunk and antennae. The security guard standing in the doorway says, “ma’am, you can’t bring that in here.” Panel 2: the woman turns around and gestures at the creature. She says, “come on… he’s not hurting anyone.” Panel 3: the security guard points matter-of-factly at a sign on the wall behind him. The sign reads in bold red letters, “NO SHNOOBS. NO EXCEPTIONS.” It features a picture of an identical orange creature, the humble shnoob.

NZ First/Winston Peters are, by order of magnitude more than in '23's general election, acting as a network bridging/bonding agent - linking to, & through party's health 'policy', invoking/courting leading anti-vaxx, conspiracy, & far-right network discourse, & related disinformation + conspiracies.

An early reading of potential implications for electoral integrity, based on what VFF alone had promoted to date amongst a subscriber based of 100k (likely eventually touching 4-5X more) isn't, I'd argue, marginal. VFF knows this, but performatively underplay their influence to escape scrutiny.

As with 2025's local govt elections, Voices for Freedom is accelerating general election-related output - which is to say, anti-Labour/Green narratives (from subtle to strident), aimed at influencing the exercise of franchise through network-effects, which they are very good at crafting.
