new from me on the Verso blog: what happened to the U.S. climate movement? what can we learn from it's dissipation? and in a time of quietude, what can be gleaned from contrasts with the data center rebellion? www.versobooks.com/blogs/news/w...

Where is the U.S. climate movement?
In the United States, there is a pervasive sense that the once-ascendent climate movement is in disarray or has even disappeared. The prior decade saw the actions and ambitions of climate activism bec...

academic book reviews used to be a bloodbath
By refusing to locate Stein's work historically within the issues of philosophy, psychology, epistemology, and linguistics with which she was actually engaged, and by asserting that her 'experimental work is essentially 'non-referential, Marianne DeKoven struggles for a language in which to say nothing of substance. There are constant assertions about the style of non-patriarchal language without commitment to its content. Linguistic structure is invoked but never actually analysed in terms of syntax, code, semiotic, or semantic. The structure of thought is positea against language without the linguistic and epistemological' implications of such a gesture being raised in a critical way. For someone interested in "deconstruction', words like 'essential' and 'core' appear with strange frequency. The result is, as the book goes on, an increasing irritation of critic with author. For the undifferentiated, pre-symbolic essentialism of anti-patriarchal truth that Marianne DeKoven equates with Stein's experiments lacks a content of communicative jouissance which is supposed to be its hallmark. In her conclusion, Marianne Dekoven speaks fulsomely of the 'historical-political' context of Stein's work. This book gives us neither history nor politics. The task has been proposed, not accepted.

the environmental apologia for data centers (which compete w other demands for regional water use w/in a time-window-limited capacity, it’s disingenuous to claim it’s abt aggregate) always bottoms out ‘well it’ll improve’ + some whataboutism re the meat industry. these do not answer the critique
