Aus der britischen Stadt Norwich kam kürzlich die Mitteilung, daß man für die Beheizung eines städtischen Gebäudes ein eigenartiges Verfahren in Anwendung bringen werde: das Haus soll im kommenden Winter mit kaltem Wasser aus dem daran vorbeifließenden Fluß Wensum beheizt werden. Die technische Einrichtung, die dazu verwendet wird, nennt man eine Wärmepumpe. Sie dient, wie der Name zum Ausdruck bringt, dazu, Wärme hochzupumpen oder, genauer gesagt, von einer niedrigen auf eine höhere Temperatur zu bringen. Im Grunde ist die Wärmepumpe nichts anderes als eine Kältemaschine, und jeder, der über einen motorisch betriebenen Kühlschrank verfügt, kann sich ihre Wirkungsweise unschwer klarmachen. Denn das Kühlaggregat eines solchen Schrankes läßt im Betrieb ständig erwärmte Luft wegströmen, es hebt gewissermaßen die Wärme, die es dem Kühlraum entzieht, auf eine höhere Temperatur empor und bläst sie als warme Luft von sich fort. Nun braucht man sich nur vorzustellen, der Kühlraum würde von einem Fluß durchströmt; dann würde dem Flußwasser die Wärme entzogen, es würde beispielsweise von zehn Grad auf acht Grad abgekühlt werden. Die entzogene Wärme aber würde nach wie vor in Form eines dreißig oder vierzig Grad warmen Luftstroms wieder zum Vorschein kommen, bei einer solchen Temperatur also, daß man mit ihr Wohnräume beheizen könnte. So geschieht es denn auch tatsächlich bei der eingangs erwähnten Anlage, die übrigens keineswegs die erste ihrer Art ist. Da jedoch die Wärmepumpe ständig mechanische Antriebsenergie erfordert, hat sich ihre Anwendung zu Heizzwecken bisher auf Gegenden beschränkt, in denen Kohlen teuer oder selten sind, während Energie preiswert zur Verfügung steht, wie in der Schweiz. Der Gewinn, der sich dabei erzielen läßt, hängt von dem zu überwindenden Temperaturunterschied ab. (...)
