Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 10hIf you look up MLK's original "arc of history" rhetoric, he clearly means basically this: progress toward justice happens *because* people work for it, so draw inspiration from that instead of wondering exactly when we'll "win." Unsurprisingly, everyone misquotes him as meaning "it'll just happen!" 040
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I mean that NYC DSA, in all of its official capacities, disagrees strongly with describing Oct 7th as "war crimes" committed by Hamas. Isn't that an accurate statement of their position? 110

Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yeah, polarization is at the heart of all this. No one can fairly expect Mamdani to become "pro-Israel" by any reasonable definition, but there are ways to speak publicly about it that don't always default to zero-sum. I'm sure he's capable of understanding that, but so far not mature enough. 010
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The legitimately critical view is that he has not shifted his approach from activist to mayor. Activists always prioritize their own side's suffering, but with a huge constituency as an elected, it's reasonable to ask that he not keep relativizing one side's trauma EVERY time he speaks about it. 110

Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Jewish self-determination in Israel is a fact regardless of what Mamdani or anyone else thinks. His actual words have condemned Oct 7th, so it would be worth focusing public attention on how many of his supporters are pro-Oct 7th to get him to keep repeating it and driving them apart. 200
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026You got me there, I don't understand what could possibly be the point you think you're making. 100

Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I think Jewish leaders have mistakenly missed the chance to drive a wedge that he's opened up with his admissions that Oct 7th was a war crime + Hamas killed innocents. His activist base DOES NOT believe those things, AT ALL, and highlighting that could raise a cost to him for discussing it at all. 130
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Then we're disagreeing on where the antisemitism is here. I do not agree that someone who admits Hamas committed war crimes is being antisemitic. 110
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026You can bang your head against the wall but he and others won't stop saying those things. The ship has long since sailed on when pushback could achieve that. But a key wedge to push that's been missed is the split between what even he admits about Hamas and what loudmouth activist nuts still say. 220
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026My own preference is to focus on the things he does say -- Oct 7th constituted "horrific war crimes," and that Hamas committed them -- that the activist circles he comes from VEHEMENTLY disagree with. 241
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026By "fissured" do you mean that if there's peace with the Palestinians, that it would hasten/bring about collapse in Israel? 100
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Clair's movie uses Christie's ending from her own stage adaptation, while the 2015 TV series does stick much closer to the book. I liked the series cast a lot but thought the flashback killings were too blunt -- one eerily powerful effect of the book is they'd all gotten away with "indirect" murder. 010
Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The psychological intensity of the book is incredibly relentless. Clair did pretty well in portraying the mechanics of the story, but the greatness of the book is pretty elusive when trying to make it visual. 010

Haggai Elitzur @helitzur.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Right, and while I don't know about Guthrie in particular, Hollywood communists flipped back + forth consistent with approved Soviet positions: anti-Nazi/fascist and pro-supplying their opponents (e.g. Spanish Civil War), until joining with US isolationists as pro-"stay out" post-Hitler/Stalin pact. 050
