lmao, Scott Alexander the Neoreactionary Apologist seemingly unaware in his Messiah-posting that his other cult leader Curtis Yarvin loves comparing Yudkowsky to Shabbatai Zevi
INTERVIEWER: More lightning round takes on what became of Less Wrong?

YARVIN: Were you ever a rationalist? Are you now, or have you ever been a rationalist, I should say?

INTERVIEWER: I was friends with them. They were always encouraging me to jump right in, but I was happy being a peripheral.

YARVIN: I respect those people, but there's a sort of Peter principle to them there. I always wanted to troll them with my Bayesian analysis of Barack Obama's birth certificate. The problem is—adopting that name—no one should ever adopt a self-aggrandizing name for anything that they do. It kills you instantly. It's instantly pretentious. Not only does it not fool anyone else, its main effect is to fool yourself, and so when you compare being a rationalist like Eliezer Yudkowsky to being someone like Socrates, who was like, "My wisdom is knowing what I don't know", I see on one hand wisdom, and I see on the other hand arrogance. And when I choose between wisdom and arrogance, it's obvious which I want to choose. Eliezer always reminded me—I've only met him a few times, never talked much, but—it's funny, the person that Eliezer always reminded me of was—do you know who Sabbatai Zevi was?

INTERVIEWER: The Jewish historical figure, the one who was supposed to be the messiah, and then converted to Islam—

YARVIN: Exactly, exactly. If you look at woodcuts of Sabbatai Zevi, it's Eliezer Yudkowsky; it's the same person. There's a lot of inbreeding going on there. More than that, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that in the same position, Eliezer Yudkowsky would also convert to Islam.

Hey you heard about this story coming out of Massachusetts? Apparently this group of self-selected individuals, who largely feel out of place in a world of great sorrow and despair - like, they're in this world, but not of it - formed a very intentional community as an example to the rest of the world, like a beacon that shines on a hill. And now they're tearing each other apart over seemingly inscrutable moral infractions! All this, in Massachusetts! Can you believe it?

very possible. personally I think many liberals have a lot of soreness on the topic of Democratic effectiveness during the years of Joe Manchin, so sometimes they get flashback trauma but also I think state GAC bans are already illegal under Bostock. But what can you do. Calvinball.

Hélianthe @helianthe.net · 25/09/2026
on strictly technical grounds, you don't even need a trifecta. Control of 50%+1 of the House of Representatives can use the supply power in the Origination Clause to force all other branches into compliance
041
Hélianthe @helianthe.net · 25/09/2026
that's what I'm saying though, in principle you're right (or should be right) in practice doing that would require a larger majority and a friendly supreme court, like what was required for other federal civil rights legislation or a willingness to break historical norms, which wasn't Biden lol

Hélianthe @helianthe.net · 25/09/2026
honestly the disconnect is that you have the logical expectation that American democracy should work on a principle of Parliamentary supremacy (cf. Bagehot), when in fact it operates on the principle of Calvinball (cf. Marbury vs Madison)

rhapsody is rhapto, “I stitch” and oide, song. It’s a song of sewing many parts together in improvisation The opposite of rhapto is luo, “I loosen”, so “lysode” would be a song of parting, releasing and deliverance

My critique of Rationalism it's trying too hard to be cool, it's too afraid, ironically, of being cringe. HPMOR could have been a hilarious self-deprecation "OMG we are so lame" deconstruction. It hits this perfectly note exactly once, in an Omake, before Eleizer got too high off the audience

"That which can be destroyed by the truth should be" is confused. What seems to be destroyed by the truth never was in the first place See how much clearer and more earnest a similar thought is in Gerard Manley Hopkins's translation of Adoro Te Devote but ofc that's religous and therefore cringe
Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore,
Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more,
See, Lord, at Thy service low lies here a heart
Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art.

"That which can be destroyed by the truth should be" is confused. What seems to be destroyed by the truth, never was in the first place.

See how much clearer and more earnest the same thought is in Gerard Manley Hopkins's translation of Adoro Te Devote

What do you think of the argument that the 2001 AUMF technically could authorize the Iran War, if the president declares "I have determined Iran aided the 9/11 attacks" in some way? A lot of GWOT has worked this way in practice over the past 25 years, but imo is extra-constitutional, at best
(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

Yes, I agree. My thinking on "in the aggregate" is that the hegemonic role could be subsumed into institutions, rather than any one country or entity becoming a "successor hegemon"
