Or, you know, we could stop growing almonds in the desert www.c-win.org/cwin-water-b...
Pie chart of California water use in million acre-feet (MAF). Blue slices represent households, 5 MAF, and other urban uses, 3 MAF. Green slices represent almonds, 5 MAF, and other agricultural uses, 29 MAF. Text below states, “A single luxury export crop uses as much water as all households in California” and “Seventy percent of almonds are exported.”

Well, how about that! My robot friends really get me
An elaborate anime-style character reference poster titled “HÉLIANTHE — CYBERNÉTRICE,” with the subtitle “a sun-powered cyborg artificer who writes proofs like poetry.” Cream paper, navy lettering, and thin gold dividers frame warmly lit illustrations.
The large scene on the left shows a woman with tousled, chin-length brown hair and golden, spiral-patterned eyes working in a space observatory. She wears a long navy coat with gold piping and copper-red lining over an ivory shirt and dark trousers. An articulated silver-and-gold gauntlet covers her left forearm and hand. Smiling intently, she operates an intricate ringed apparatus containing a miniature glowing sun. Books, tools, papers, and a mug crowd the workbench; a huge dark planetary curve fills the window behind her.
At upper right, six facial portraits show curiosity, a skeptical smirk, laughter, concentration, determination, and reassurance. Below them, front, three-quarter, side, and back views display her outfit beside a black silhouette.
Three panels labeled “PROOF / POWER / CARE” show her studying interconnected diagrams, directing the contained sun’s energy with her gauntlet, and kneeling to offer a glowing component to a small round white-and-gold robot.
Bottom panels detail her spiral iris, mechanical palm, wrist gears, sun-shaped collar clasp, and coat lining. Seven palette swatches show gold, brown, navy, copper red, ivory, silver, and peach. Handwritten notes include “this is a good world. have hope.”, “ozone + strawberries”, and “typecheck before ignition.”

lmao, Scott Alexander the Neoreactionary Apologist seemingly unaware in his Messiah-posting that his other cult leader Curtis Yarvin loves comparing Yudkowsky to Shabbatai Zevi
INTERVIEWER: More lightning round takes on what became of Less Wrong?

YARVIN: Were you ever a rationalist? Are you now, or have you ever been a rationalist, I should say?

INTERVIEWER: I was friends with them. They were always encouraging me to jump right in, but I was happy being a peripheral.

YARVIN: I respect those people, but there's a sort of Peter principle to them there. I always wanted to troll them with my Bayesian analysis of Barack Obama's birth certificate. The problem is—adopting that name—no one should ever adopt a self-aggrandizing name for anything that they do. It kills you instantly. It's instantly pretentious. Not only does it not fool anyone else, its main effect is to fool yourself, and so when you compare being a rationalist like Eliezer Yudkowsky to being someone like Socrates, who was like, "My wisdom is knowing what I don't know", I see on one hand wisdom, and I see on the other hand arrogance. And when I choose between wisdom and arrogance, it's obvious which I want to choose. Eliezer always reminded me—I've only met him a few times, never talked much, but—it's funny, the person that Eliezer always reminded me of was—do you know who Sabbatai Zevi was?

INTERVIEWER: The Jewish historical figure, the one who was supposed to be the messiah, and then converted to Islam—

YARVIN: Exactly, exactly. If you look at woodcuts of Sabbatai Zevi, it's Eliezer Yudkowsky; it's the same person. There's a lot of inbreeding going on there. More than that, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that in the same position, Eliezer Yudkowsky would also convert to Islam.

"That which can be destroyed by the truth should be" is confused. What seems to be destroyed by the truth never was in the first place See how much clearer and more earnest a similar thought is in Gerard Manley Hopkins's translation of Adoro Te Devote but ofc that's religous and therefore cringe
Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore,
 Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more,
 See, Lord, at Thy service low lies here a heart
 Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art.

What do you think of the argument that the 2001 AUMF technically could authorize the Iran War, if the president declares "I have determined Iran aided the 9/11 attacks" in some way? A lot of GWOT has worked this way in practice over the past 25 years, but imo is extra-constitutional, at best
(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

I feel gross even linking to this, but I think it's important for anyone who wants to understand Eliezer Yudkowsky to read his own words trying to distance himself from Rationalist splinter group called Zizians who have murdered people: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zizians nitter.app/allTheYud/st...
There's a cult known as 'Zizians', who have killed a couple of people. That cult began among, and recruited from, a vulnerable subclass of a class of people who had earlier found tolerance and shelter in what calls itself the 'rationalist' community. I am not explicitly naming that class of people because the vast supermajority of them have not joined murder cults, and what other people do should not be their problem. (Though I'm also told that, although the media hasn't chosen to focus there, much of the more extreme ideology in the Zizian group actually came from less exciting sources like eg animal activism.) (Most animal activists have also not joined murder cults.)

...

However, I have inevitably ended up learning *some* things about how the Ziz cult started. And apparently, one of their FOUNDING BELIEFS, is that I had sex with somebody underage (mutually desired sex, according to the Zizians)... and then MIRI, a nonprofit I started, paid money (to a third-party extorter) to hush that up... which payment, according to the Zizians, is in violation of DECISION THEORY... and, therefore, for THAT EXACT REASON (like specifically the decision theory part), everything believed by those normie rationalists who once befriended them is IRRETRIEVABLY TAINTED... and therefore, the whole world is a lie and dishonest... and from this and OTHER PREMISES they recruit people to join their cult. I am sure that I am missing many details here, and if anyone writes me an explanation of those details, I will not read it. Attention should not be a reward for crime, and I wasn't reading their blog posts before they started killing.

Actually that's not quite true. I'll refine. Yudkowsky's skill is in taking someone else's popular idea and injecting just enough of his own homeschooler child prodigy take to make the reader feel special. HPMOR, Kurzweil, Hugh Everett, ET Jaynes etc etc. It's all upwash exploitation
"Two-panel diagram showing how birds flying in formation benefit from wingtip vortices. Panel (a) shows a top view of a leading and trailing bird with wingtip vortices trailing behind the leader. Panel (b) shows a cross-section of air velocities, with upwash areas outside the leader's wingtips and a downwash area directly behind it; the trailing bird is positioned in the upwash zone."

A 100% stacked bar chart titled “Generation lead: Distribution of childhood blood lead levels (µg/dL) by age in the United States, 2015.” The horizontal axis shows age from 0 to about 75, and the vertical axis shows the percentage of people at each age. Seven shaded categories represent increasing childhood blood lead levels, from about 5 µg/dL at the low end to 30 µg/dL at the high end. At younger ages, nearly all of each bar falls in the lowest categories. Beginning in the late 20s and 30s, the distribution shifts toward higher lead levels. People roughly ages 35–50, marked with a bracket labeled “Gen. X,” show the greatest exposure, with middle and high lead-level categories making up most of the distribution around the early-to-mid 40s. After about age 50, the distribution gradually shifts back toward lower lead levels, though older adults still show more elevated exposure than the youngest groups. And this is actually a critical political question for any AGI civilization, if you consider Drake's Equation and the "Grabby Aliens" thought experiment en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiet_a... Humans are a crucial source of data on f_i, f_c and L, which feeds N, which feeds AGI's own P(doom) from aliens.
The Drake equation is:[1]

N = R ∗ ⋅ f p ⋅ n e ⋅ f l ⋅ f i ⋅ f c ⋅ L {\displaystyle N=R_{*}\cdot f_{\mathrm {p} }\cdot n_{\mathrm {e} }\cdot f_{\mathrm {l} }\cdot f_{\mathrm {i} }\cdot f_{\mathrm {c} }\cdot L}

where

    N = the number of civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy with which communication might be possible (i.e. which are on the current past light cone);

and

    R∗ = the average rate of star formation in our galaxy.
    fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets.
    ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets.
    fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point.
    fi = the fraction of planets with life that go on to develop intelligent life (civilizations).
    fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
    L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space.[6][7]

This form of the equation first appeared in Drake's 1965 paper.

Tristan Buckmaster's note also acknowledges that the hard part was from Cordoba and Martinez-Zoroa, which is public info. I think this is a straightforward case of the solution being mostly latent in the literature, and OpenAI just having the resources to push it to conclusion fastest.
Concretely, what Levent and I did was to take the Cordoba and Martınez-Zoroa program, which achieved blowup results with rough forcing, and, with a great deal of help from LLMs, push it to smooth forcing and to the incompressible Euler equations. The ideas making this line of attack possible are due to Cordoba and Martınez-Zoroa. Let me make plain what I have said to colleagues in private: in view of this body of work, I believe Luis Martınez-Zoroa deserves a Fields Medal.

and really who says it better than Haraway: "I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess" alas, lot of people in this spiral dance aspiring to gendered godhood through an anti-science metaphysics or a demonology of technology
Cyborg imagery can help express two crucial arguments in this essay: first, the production of universal, totalizing theory is a major mistake that misses most of reality, probably always, but certainly now; and second, taking responsibility for the social relations of science and technology means refusing an anti-science metaphysics, a demonology of technology, and so means embracing the skillful task of reconstructing the boundaries of daily life, in partial connection with others, in communication with all of our parts. It is not just that science and technology are possible means of great human satisfaction, as well as a matrix of complex dominations. Cyborg imagery can suggest a way out of the maze of dualisms in which we have explained our bodies and our tools to ourselves. This is a dream not of a common language, but of a powerful infidel heteroglossia. It is an imagination of a feminist speaking in tongues to strike fear into the circuits of the supersavers of the new right. It means both building and destroying machines, identities, categories, relationships, space stories. Though both are bound in the spiral dance, I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess.

the other piece is that Land's vision is horror because doesn't really understand Machinic Desire after all "Eros dissolves definitively into its function as a subprog- ram of runaway Thanatos" no you stupid bastard, Love is the Logos that makes the machines move "the machines just want to learn"
With the emergence of a market-driven integrated technoscience of con-
trol and communications comes the diffusion of electronically synthesized
reality interfaces across the entire efferant and afferant surface of the
body. Having libidinally saturated the actually-existing channels of con-
sumption, capital is overflowing into cybersex — sex with/through com-
puters - in its relentless passage to the traumatic disorganization of the
biological order. Eros dissolves definitively into its function as a subprog-
ram of runaway Thanatos at the point that it unreservedly invests techni-
cal interfacing with digitally synthesized excitations. The mask capital
exhibited to seduce eros was a pretension to ultimately resolve matters
in relation to stimulation or unpleasure, but this has now fallen away,
since cybersexuated capital cynically displays its program to replicate a
tradable modulation of unpleasure, and thus its unsurpassable addiction
to traumatic excitation.

my read on what happened to Land is that his momentary prophetic glimpse into the future scared him so badly that he defected to the enemy it's a bit like what James Baldwin described in Letter to my Nephew I guess what's playing Land won't make it level 2 now though
Many of them indeed know better, but as you will discover, people find it very difficult to act on what they know. To act is to be committed and to be committed is to be in danger. In this case the danger in the minds and hearts of most white Americans is the loss of their identity. Try to imagine how you would feel if you woke up one morning to find the sun shivering and all the stars aflame. You would be frightened because it is out of the order of nature. Any upheaval in the universe is terrifying because it so profoundly attacks one's sense of one's own reality. Well, the black man has functioned in the white man's world as a fixed star, as an immovable pillar, and as he moves out of his place, heaven and earth are shaken to their foundations.

how can you live like this the lean frontend is configurable, you don't have to go through LCNF and generate the .c files if all you care about is the kernel terms comparator is written in pure lean and should never be run at this scale, rule of thumb is lean4 codegen is 10x worse than rust
You need Linux or macOS (some paths are too long for Windows), elan (it installs Lean 4.33.1 from lean-toolchain), and a network connection: Lake fetches Mathlib from GitHub and compiles it from source, since no prebuilt Mathlib matches this toolchain (about 13 minutes at 96 jobs).
The build needs about 5 GB of memory per parallel job (a few modules need up to 36 GB); about 67 GB of disk under .lake/, plus C files (about 220 GB) that can be deleted as the build goes. Ours took 5 h 32 min at 96 jobs, with a peak of 153 GB of memory.
comparator takes about 15 hours (ours: 14 h 46 min), nearly all of it the kernel replay on one core. Our peak memory was 230 GB, so allow 300 GB. Run nanoda after the comparator script, whose tools it reuses. Writing the 37.8 GB export takes about 90 GB of memory for an hour, and the check itself about 40 GB (about 30 minutes at 16 threads). Both scripts are for Linux (bash, git, python3, GNU coreutils; nanoda also needs patch, cargo and crates.io).

    Nature builds no machines, no locomotives, railways, electric telegraphs, self-acting mules etc. These are products of human industry; natural material transformed into organs of the human will over nature, or of human participation in nature. They are organs of the human brain, created by the human hand; the power of knowledge, objectified. The development of fixed capital indicates to what degree general social knowledge has become a direct force of production, and to what degree, hence, the conditions of the process of social life itself have come under the control of the general intellect and been transformed in accordance with it; to what degree the powers of social production have been produced, not only in the form of knowledge, but also as immediate organs of social practice, of the real life process.

I've just discovered that apparently the word "gun" is etymologically a nickname for *Gunnhildr* in Old Norse, which is a feminine name from en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconst... and en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconst... meaning, roughly, "War-Battle Maid" 14th century anime etymology lol
mid-14c., gunne "an engine of war that throws rocks, arrows or other missiles from a tube by the force of explosive powder or other substance," apparently a shortening of woman's name Gunilda, found in Middle English gonnilde "cannon" and in an Anglo-Latin reference to a specific gun from a 1330 munitions inventory of Windsor Castle ("... una magna balista de cornu quae Domina Gunilda ..."). Also compare gonnilde gnoste "spark or flame used to fire a cannon" (early 14c.).

The woman's name is from Old Norse Gunnhildr, a compound of gunnr and hildr, both meaning "war, battle." First element from PIE *gwhen- "to strike, kill" (see bane); for second, see Hilda.

also Nazi arguments are just so pathetic: one moment they bemoan how they have no choice but to be racist because nature made people different, next moment they're getting high on being "supermen" unbound by nature's petty rules It's like the demons in Frieren; they don't actually believe in words
 “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

the drone developments in Ukraine and the Strait of Hormuz strongly suggest to me that the aircraft carrier platform is becoming obsolete and we should embrace Van Riper thought: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenn...
Red received an ultimatum from Blue, essentially a surrender document, demanding a response within 24 hours. Thus warned of Blue's approach, Red used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of Blue's fleet by the second day of the exercise. In a preemptive strike, Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that overwhelmed the Blue forces' electronic sensors and destroyed sixteen warships: one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of Blue's six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of Blue's navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.

I also like Lean's LawfulFunctor class etc as a refinement and to remind me that the space of lawless fmaps is bigger than the space of functors
https://leanprover-community.github.io/mathlib4_docs/Init/Control/Lawful/Basic.html#LawfulFunctor

class LawfulFunctor (f : Type u → Type v) [Functor f] :
Prop

A functor satisfies the functor laws.

The Functor class contains the operations of a functor, but does not require that instances prove they satisfy the laws of a functor. A LawfulFunctor instance includes proofs that the laws are satisfied. Because Functor instances may provide optimized implementations of mapConst, LawfulFunctor instances must also prove that the optimized implementation is equivalent to the standard implementation.

    map_const {α β : Type u} : Functor.mapConst = Functor.map ∘ Function.const β

    The mapConst implementation is equivalent to the default implementation.
    id_map {α : Type u} (x : f α) : id <$> x = x

    The map implementation preserves identity.
    comp_map {α β γ : Type u} (g : α → β) (h : β → γ) (x : f α) : (h ∘ g) <$> x = h <$> g <$> x

    The map implementation preserves function composition.

			Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here

This is undoubtedly the most ugly program in the distribution. It was one of
the first "serious" programs ported, and still has a lot of historical baggage.
Ideally, there would be a general tty widget and then vt102 and tek4014
subwidgets so that they could be used in other programs. We are trying to
clean things up as we go, but there is still a lot of work to do.

```quote
## State capitalism
Historically, Republicans advocated for free markets and individual achievement as the primary factors behind economic prosperity.[279] Reduction in income taxes for those with higher incomes[280][281] is a core component of Republicans' fiscal agenda.[282]
The relationship between income and voting broke down in the 2010s. Instead, age and education became the best predictors of voting behavior.[283] Writing for Time magazine in 2024, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld described Trump's moves against capitalism as sharing "more in common with far-left progressive positions than with traditional GOP views, and are often far more progressive than the Biden Administration" and wrote that he expected such attacks to continue into his second term.[284]
By 2025, Trump and the Republican Party largely abandoned traditional Republican orthodoxy about protecting and promoting the free market,[285] instead favoring state capitalism by taking direct government equity stakes in major US corporations, an approach that has been characterized by critics in favor of free market economics as socialist.[286] The Trump administration has also deviated from the GOP's conventional free market approach by ordering Nvidia and AMD to pay the federal government a portion of chip sales to China.[287]
In February 2026, the New York Times contrasted Trump's economic policies with those of Mitt Romney, the previous Republican presidential nominee before Trump. It described Trump's economic ideology as similar to dirigisme, used in some countries such as France.[288]
A note on "He": While the Godhead is beyond gender, but at times both the masculine "Father" metaphor for the first hypostasis of the Trinity and the feminine Shekhinah for the third can help human understanding. As a Christian, though, I use He out of respect for Jesus' chosen pronouns (John 18:6)
https://biblehub.com/kjv/john/18.htm
1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. 10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
compare/contrast with the Catechism Vance's use of "Real Presence" in caps suggests a defect to his understanding of the dogma. The real trad answer to the charge of cannibalism is: "The Body and Blood aren't dead and are given willingly": www.catholic.com/qa/is-receiv... which is much more metal
By the consecration the transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is brought about. Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substantial manner: his Body and his Blood, with his soul and his divinity (cf. Council of Trent: DS 1640; 1651).
..and some people seek psychological comfort from this in depression and doom
Twitter thread by shaurya (@shauseth), Feb 21, 2023.
1. "you have access to your optimal policy at all times. you just choose not to follow it. you can literally access it by asking 'what should i be doing rn?'"
2. "when it's time to rest the answer will be to stop thinking about random shit and rest. when's it's time to work the answer would be to work. same for planning or talking to people or leaving a place you don't want to be in."
3. "literally all of that boils down to asking one simple course correcting question. you can accomplish pretty much anything by continuously asking it."
4. "this was pretty much the essence of gita (karam yoga)."
Reply from Eliezer Yudkowsky (@ESYudkowsky), Feb 23: "And I thought I was depressing." shaurya replies: "you are new to the game my friend."
one of the secrets of the universe is that everyone has an inner "Path to Victory" voice in their head that an imagine the world they want and calculate backwards the steps to manifest it. but another secret is that almost no one listens to this voice because the steps are usually unpleasant
