I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

Christa Pike was tortured yesterday by the state of TN in every single USians name and the fact is that this is a country that is mostly OK with this. This says everything about all of us. We are all implicated in this barbaric practice. It's sickening.

Today is the 11th anniversary of Chicago Torture Justice Memorials’ historic #ReparationsWON. This effort was co-organized by our cofounder Mariame Kaba, and serves as a model for what justice for survivors of state violence can look like beyond apologies and the illusions of police prosecutions:

Unfortunately Mary Oliver’s Of the Empire remains evergreen.
Of The Empire
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

Some screenshots from itp_chicago IG. You can see how federal agents stake their presence around some of these communities in intersections in the middle of traffic and sidewalks in front of businesses. This feels very particular to the SW Side with Little Village being a prime target for this.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

I can’t get over how beyond despicable it is to detain street vendors, people that keep our streets vibrant and safer because of their presence. Street vendors are some of the most vulnerable and visible yet we are being told their detainment is to keep us safe. Ridiculous.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

I just want to interrupt your day to remind you that as of November 2024, 96% of children in Gaza felt their death to be imminent and MORE THAN HALF SAID THEY WANT TO DIE. archive.ph/JlVfm
By February, 2024, UNICEF estimated that at least seventeen thousand children were unaccompanied or had been separated from their families. By April of that year, the Gaza health ministry had documented more than twelve thousand wounded children, a number that, in 2025, has increased to fifty thousand killed or injured, according to a report by UNICEF. Alone, displaced, and traumatized, the children who are still alive are extremely psychologically vulnerable. Even before this most recent war, Gaza’s children were already showing signs of strain: a 2022 Save the Children survey found that eighty-four per cent felt fear and seventy-eight per cent lived with grief. In November, 2024, a report by the Community Training Center for Crisis Management found that ninety-six per cent of children living through this war feel that their death is imminent, and nearly half said that they want to die.
