I was taught by Irish nuns who themselves had learned to write in this style of handwriting, and so do I. Very few of my similar aged friends write like that.

Unsupervised AI agent reportedly deletes TV show’s entire edit weeks before release, erasing months of work — TV show can't air, AI agent was given access to the production server and wiped the finish...
Another case of AI agents deleting something they shouldn't.

'who do not share our values' I think they've made it abundantly clear what Reform UK's values are - poisonous, offensive, hateful, and unwanted by the majority of the UK.

I feel seen. It's a corollary of this meme
A three section graphic.
Top
Time arrow line that fills the width of the frame, made to lok like a bookshelf, caption. Time it would take to get through my reading list.
Middle
Time line to 3 quarters of frame width, ending at an image of galaxies. Caption. Time left before the heat death of the universe.
Bottom.
Stick figure labelled. Me.
Caption. Ooh this book looks good, I should buy it.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

One thing they don’t teach you at Professor School is how lovely it is to meet up with all your students years after and hearing about all their success. 🥹

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

I started listening in May. The voice actor is really good with Indian/Pakistani/Afghan accents and RP English, but the Scots/Irish and whatever the sea captain's accent was supposed to be were all dire. The story clips along well though.

Finally finished The Far Pavilions audio book. 48+ hours of listening. I was surprised how anti-colonial it was, despite the boys' own adventure/ sweeping romance of the story. I'm glad I read it, but I think A Suitable Boy is a better novel (of similar length and about India)

Murray went on to found Endell Street Military Hospital in London, staffed entirely by women. One of the most successful military hospitals of the war. Its motto was: "Deeds, not Words." When the war ended, she ordered the suffragette flag raised, to the sound of cheers from the male patients.

‘Grotesque’ cull of BBC shows axes launchpad for public academics
Cancellation of Radio 4 programmes dedicated to ideas is a huge blow for younger scholars keen to connect with the public, say those who made their names on air

The other day I talked to an aunt who has truly seen everything, and she couldn’t overstate how much more racist England now feels. When a working-class black woman in her mid-seventies tells you it’s bad, then it’s really bad.
