It should be feasible! The biggest New Skill here would be working in the round, and the trickiest bit of that is just getting that first circle started.

Not all the bloodwork has come back yet. They took an epic number of vials, though, so maybe one of the others will be more useful. (Eeyore voice): Mayyyybe.

which is its own sort of hell; "inflammation" is ridonkulously difficult to research as a layman because of wellness-influencer-slop, so I haven't gone down that rabbit hole much yet. I've been hoping it goes away while treating any of the other piles of stuff that I have that might be causing it.

O, the brief excitement of getting a bloodwork result that says HOLY SHIT ABNORMAL, thinking it might finally hold an answer! and then looking up what the test is and it's just, like, "is patient lying y/n" (this is an exaggeration) (it's testing for the existence of inflammation)

I dunno. I didn't love astronomy enough to put up with... whatever those vibes were.

In hindsight, that project seems even dodgier: the code was already written, all I had to do was load the film up and run the command. There was no verification that the data had actually been copied correctly. Did it even matter whether I screwed it all up? Was the science not the point of me?

I could never put my finger on why I didn't stick with astronomy after undergrad. Nobody harassed/assaulted me, so surely I couldn't blame it on that? But I often think about the REU mentor who was "so relieved!" that I was pretty.

Doesn't have to be the gut triggering a flare, off. I think a lot of the flare triggers boil down to "I spent more energy than I actually had" and it turns out even just thinking too hard can fit that bill, I definitely have flared into migraines and "flu-like symptoms" just from braining.

Heather Shipman @heathershipman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
A lot of my flares like this were coming from the gut first, even though that's not at all where I was feeling them yet.

Heather Shipman @heathershipman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
From an ME/CFS/fibro perspective, I would wonder if the causality is going the other direction - that both the migraine and the ache/fatigue after might be "flare" symptoms, arising from something going on abdominally.

Mine is a pound of ground sausage and a pack of frozen peppers and onions, instead of the lamb and spicier peppers, and just one kind of canned tomato thing, and whichever close-enough spices I could get easily. It is still delicious.

I always enjoy your articles; I feel we enjoy many of the same things. I wish I understood my own recipe; I'd like to *live* in the sensation of endless delicious books. I'm bouncing off many of the books I pick up, lately - but I think that's an artifact of picking up many more books than usual.

In Star Trek people often complain that replicated food is not as good as naturally produced food, which is weird when replicators are presumably using the same technology as transporters, which can perfectly replicate Spock every time. But is Spock getting less flavoursome over time? In this essay,

I really enjoyed The Dragon Has Some Complaints by @wiswell.bsky.social ! I sat with chapter 17 (It Feels Like It Never Changes) for a good long while - it really captures the struggle to maintain hope through incremental progress. It's too easy to forget that it *is* changing, when change is slow.

Heatwaves, ironically, make my chronic illness(es?) psychologically easier to bear; my heat woozies are prrrobably the symptom closest to being able to ACTUALLY kill me, so the goal for the day becomes just don't die and that feels achievable! I can let everything else slide, guilt-free, for that!

This attempted Earthrise is an atrocity. I was looking for an interesting gray, in the pile of little paint tubes. What possessed me to squee and pick up the copper? the moon is not copper i am now pretending this was an underpainting, as if i know what an underpainting is

When the Artemis program was first announced, the claim, all over the website, was that the landing mission (which has since been shifted from III to IV) would include "the first woman and the first person of color" to walk on the Moon. Last year, that language was deleted from the NASA site.

I'm a little bummed about an all-male Artemis crew, but at least (a) it is not also all-white and (b) it's not going to the moon itself; a necessary test, but hopefully entirely boring. I *want* to believe this one's all dudes because the ladies are getting actual moon missions. I hope that's true.

I can pretty reliably bake a pan of brownies, these days, and riff on various flavors. Cookies, alas, are still a little out of reach - individually scooping/shaping is a risky energy commitment, still. But I can do it SOMEtimes, and that is PROGRESS.
