Waterlogged ecosystems called peatlands hold more carbon in the ground than all the world’s forests. Draining or destroying them releases the planet-warming gases into the atmosphere. Peatlands cover just 3% of Earth but store more carbon than ALL global forests combined: apnews.com/article/clim...

This story is about the Aquatic Cowboy, a boat captain and diver who recovers items lost in the lakes and rivers of Missouri. The guy has a chunk taken out of his leg by a bull shark, but still said a 10-minute job in the "Muddy Missouri" River was one of the scariest dives of his life.

📍 This individual #monarch was photographed at Indiana Dunes. My hometown of Kansas City lies in a mid-latitude corridor through which these migrating monarchs flow. What happens locally, like habitat loss and using pesticides or creating habitat and providing food sources, can affect their passage.

A bald eagle perches on a V-shaped wooden utility structure in Laramie, Wyoming, viewed from behind with its head turned slightly to the left. The image, in black and white, highlights the detailed layering of its dark feathers and pale head plumage. The bird’s powerful hooked beak and heavy talons are visible, and the rough texture of the weathered wood contrasts with the smooth, clouded sky. This raptor is a mature adult, identifiable by its fully white head and tail, common among breeding-age bald eagles.

🦅 Many Americans don't realize how dangerously close we came to losing the #BaldEagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), one of our most iconic symbols. By 1963, only about 400-500 nesting pairs still lived in the lower 48 United States. ⬇️ A bit about this remarkable bird of prey's conservation history:

🐎The American #mustang, descended from Spanish horses brought to the Americas in the 1500s, has long symbolized the untamed spirit of the West. Once numbering in the millions, wild horse populations plummeted to just 17,000 by the early 1970s due to widespread roundups and commercial exploitation.
A small band of wild mustangs stands alert on the high plains near Medicine Bow, Wyoming, framed by a backdrop of open sky and rolling sagebrush. The horses - dark bay to black with windswept manes - gather protectively around a foal, their muscular bodies and upright posture signaling both strength and vigilance in the rugged Western landscape.

🐦 The familiar "peter-peter-peter" of the tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) heralded the impending arrival of sundown. A vocal flock flew into the oak tree over my campsite each evening, staying long enough to forage and recollect the group before moving on. #Birds
A small songbird, a tufted titmouse, perches on a lichen-covered tree branch against a clear blue sky. The bird faces forward, showing its pale grayish-white chest and belly, with darker gray wings and back. Its most distinctive feature is a short, tousled crest of feathers on top of its head, giving it a slightly scruffy appearance. The titmouse has large, dark, inquisitive eyes and a small, black beak. Budding branches with yellow-green tips frame the scene, suggesting early spring. The bird’s long, pale tail hangs straight down, and the overall lighting is bright and natural, highlighting the fine texture of its feathers.

The sun dipped low in Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains. Wild turkeys flapped overhead to roost near my campsite. I was instantly transported to childhood evenings at my great-grandparents’ home in Woodward, watching those same strange shapes settle into the branches and become silhouettes. 🦃
A wild turkey perches high on a leafless, twisted branch at dusk in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma. Its large, rounded body is cloaked in rich, iridescent feathers that shimmer with bronze and copper tones as the low evening sun casts a golden glow across its back. The turkey's head is bare and pale with a wrinkled, bluish-red skin, dotted with small red wattles along its neck. It looks alert, with one beady eye sharply focused to the side and a slightly open beak as if mid-call. The strong, scaled legs grip the rugged bark, while its long tail feathers fan subtly behind it. Bare, spindly tree limbs frame the bird against a softly blurred backdrop of pale sky, creating a dramatic contrast between the sharp foreground detail and the quiet stillness of the evening forest.

The towering, jagged peak of the Grand Teton rises dramatically into the sky, bathed in surreal hues of pink and lavender during golden hour, as seen each night from a porch in Alma, Wyoming in May. #GrandTeton
The towering, jagged peak of the Grand Teton rises dramatically into the sky, bathed in surreal hues of pink and lavender during golden hour as seen from Alma, Wyoming. The mountain’s craggy face is streaked with deep vertical crevices and dotted with snowfields clinging to ledges and gullies. The fading sun casts a soft magenta glow across the snow and exposed rock, turning the entire mountain into a glowing rose and violet stone sculpture. A wisp of cloud drapes just below the summit like a ribbon of fog. In the foreground, a snow-covered ridge leads the viewer’s eye toward the base of the peak, lined with sparse, dark silhouettes of alpine trees. Above, the sky is heavy with moody purples and cool blue-gray clouds, contrasting the warmth radiating from the mountain. The atmosphere is quiet and vast, with the Tetons standing as an awe-inspiring monument in the twilight of a winter evening.

A female spruce grouse stands alert atop a patch of lingering spring snow in Yellowstone. #wildlife
A female spruce grouse stands alert atop a patch of snow-dusted ground, surrounded by dry twigs and dormant grasses. Her plump, rounded body is intricately camouflaged with a mosaic of browns, blacks, whites, and soft grays that ripple across her feathers like tree bark and leaf litter. Her chest and neck are marked by fine, evenly spaced dark barring, while her back and wings showcase complex scalloped and chevron patterns that blend seamlessly into the wintry undergrowth. Her small crest is raised slightly atop her head, giving her a watchful and regal posture. A bright, beady brown eye is sharply focused on her surroundings, and her slender black bill is pointed forward. The soft blur of evergreens and snow in the background creates a cool, quiet forest ambiance, capturing this elusive woodland bird in a rare still moment.

A moose cow grazing among the quaking aspens and lodgepole pines of Medicine Bow National Forest in Laramie, Wyoming. #wildlife
A female moose cow stands partially hidden among dense evergreens in a snowy patch of forest in Medicine Bow National Forest, Laramie, Wyoming. Her large, muscular body is cloaked in thick, dark brown fur, rough and patchy in places as she sheds her winter coat. Her long face stretches forward, nose nearly touching the bark of a pale aspen tree. Her dark eye is calm and alert, framed by a rugged brow and soft, velvety ears turned slightly back. A shaggy dewlap—or bell—hangs from her throat like a thick, wet tassel. Surrounding her are slender trunks of quaking aspens and lodgepole pines, their bark mottled with gray, black, and pale green lichen. Snow clings in tufts to the dark green needles of the pine branches that brush against her fur, contrasting the forest's filtered golden light in the background. The air feels cold and quiet, with the moose calmly foraging amid the hush of the high-altitude woods.

#Conservation actions, such as providing nest boxes, have stabilized some populations, but ongoing monitoring and habitat management are essential as climate change and habitat competition continue to pose risks.
Another male mountain bluebird perches alertly on the edge of a rusted, reddish-brown metal surface, likely a utility fixture, in Laramie, Wyoming. His feathers gleam with intense sky blue on his head and back, while his belly and lower chest are a much softer, cloudlike white. The transition between the two shades is smudged, as if painted by a watercolor brush. He faces the camera head-on, feet braced apart, long black toes curling slightly over the metal edge, casting fine shadows below. His stance is confident and watchful, and the soft-focus background melts away into muted tones of tan and sage, allowing every detail of the bird’s vivid form and the rough metal texture beneath him to stand out in contrast.

The mountain #bluebird, native to the American West, is known for its vivid blue plumage, especially in males during spring. These birds prefer open grasslands and sagebrush habitats where insects are plentiful, and they depend on nesting cavities in old trees or nest boxes.
A male mountain bluebird sits upright on a weathered, pale gray piece of split wood in Laramie, Wyoming, bathed in soft morning light. The bird’s feathers are a vibrant electric blue on his head, back, and chest, transitioning to a slightly paler, icy blue on his belly. His plump, fluffed-up form gives him a rounded, almost puffball-like appearance, as if he's soaking in the sun's warmth. His tiny black beak is short and slightly pointed, and his dark eye is sharply defined against the vivid blue of his face. One black foot grips the edge of the wood firmly, claws slightly curled. The background is a soft, creamy blur, putting the dazzling bird in crisp focus.
