I was worried if my comic is perhaps too self indulgent, but then I remembered the words of Björk and now I need to make it even more self indulgent 🥰

The USDA is trying to recind the Roadless Rule which currently protects 45 million acres of National Forests from logging and deforestation. We have until September 20th to comment and tell the USDA we don't want this! File your comment w/ link below: action.outdooralliance.org/a/roadless-d...

Today, August 4, 2026, is the actual date of the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Take a read. It’s only 5 pages long and very haunting: www.btboces.org/Downloads/7_...

This is great, thank you! It’s been kind of difficult searching for good/helpful examples so I’m glad this exists!

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

YES i followed petrapixel’s guide for setting it up and I felt SO lost every step of the way. But then after I built my first njk template, i was like. holy shit i get it lmao. You’ve been a big inspiration and motivator for me as I pushed through those early stages so thank you!!

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

Oh it is still a SS site! I’ve customized it as much as I could but am blocked in a lot of ways haha. My new site is still offline but I’m also ensuring it will also be totally responsive and work properly on mobile :)

010

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

Aaa thank you! Did you go to my art site or my neocities? My work-in-progress hasn’t been published online yet, it’s still really rough lol

110

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

Oh and since I’m starting from scratch, I’m being extra careful in ensuring my site is as accessible as possible! I’m being better about html semantics and I really appreciate how 11ty’s img plug-in yells at me if I forget any alt text haha

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

Anyway here’s where I am so far. I’m focusing on the homepage right now. I’m excited to figure out how to make 11ty generate the art gallery and blog previews!

Photo of my laptop screen showing my work-in-progress homepage.

150

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

Getting 11ty set up was a steep learning curve with my limited js knowledge and having to be introduced to nunjucks, but I’ve so far figured out: - Templating - Collections - Pagination - Automatically generating an RSS feed And like—what more do I need for a gallery + blog?

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

One of my mutuals @asuraid.art shared her experience using 11ty to easily build/maintain a static site, and I was intrigued enough to give it a shot with my art site. And my mind is blown by what’s possible.

130

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 22/07/2026

I haven’t updated anything in a while because I’m deep into remaking my website. I’ve grown to dislike squarespace’s limited customizability. I’ve learned coding through my neocities site, and not being able to implement the Cool Stuff into my SS site is so frustrating.

Thought of another fun exercise everyone can try: turn Bouba and Kiki (of the Bouba/Kiki Effect) into characters that fit your own tastes and interests

Characters Bouba and Kiki posing heroically. Bouba is round and soft and she wields a mace, and Kiki is sharp and angular and wields a sword.

Oh wow!! I’ve heard of similar restrictions myself, like an arboretum claiming copyright of all photos taken of the flowers they grow. That’s scary. Makes me wonder if a public domain photo of an animal is actually public domain. Who is liable? The artist or the photographer? Both?

110

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 16/06/2026

Here is an animal reference resource available specifically to artists.

060

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 16/06/2026

This is my understanding as well, and how I use reference photos, but I do see some artists doing one-to-one studies and sharing them online. Most cases probably don’t see any consequence, but the risk of a lawsuit is there

010

Heather Franzen @heatherfranzen.bsky.social · 16/06/2026

LRT i get very nervous when i see artists using pretty photos they find on the internet as reference, without confirming if the image is restricted/copyrighted or public domain. My philosophy is sure, sketch/study these incredible photos to learn, but don’t use it in your final work/share publicly.

THE TEAMS HAVE BEEN REVEALED!! Which one is your favourite; what will you choose this year? Something very special for our website's 10th anniversary! ✨❤️ #ThemeReveal2026

A digital drawing featuring the three teams for Art Fight's 2026 event: Comedy, Mystery and Tragedy.

'Comedy' is themed in amber and depicts a jester wearing a mask with a happy expression.

'Mystery' is themed in red and depicts a person wearing a cracked mask with no expression.

'Tragedy' is themed in blue and depicts a person wearing a mask with a sad expression.

My gut reaction is mystery/red because it’s the most metal of the three, but I do like the vibes of the comedy colors/palette. I’m kind of tempted to let the system choose for me this year though, I don’t think I’ve ever done that before! How about you?!

I finished Spiritfarer last night. LOVED the first half, felt VERY meh about all of the grinding and crafting in the second half. I lost a lot of interest in characters after a while, but the final 2-3 spirits got me all emotional again. Cried when the credits rolled. The game was a roller coaster.
