We've learned that AI is especially good at generating based on themes. It's likely that our Wishlist setting out story themes we're interested in reading is harvested as prompts to tailor a generated story to our preferences.
Example of one of our wishlists. Stylized as a paper note, the Wishlist sets out themes we want to read.
More: Unabashedly fantasy or scifi setting; queerplatonic relationships; rural/pastoral settings/symbiotic relationships (toxic or beneficial)
Less: dead spouses; retellings; stories that don't show the monster; meet cutes (we're here for established relationships)

Our Submission Guidelines are clear: no AI. We don’t want it and we don’t have time for it. We also block and filter it out in our submission system. Our contracts have clauses requiring the bought piece is original work and doesn’t use AI. These contracts were signed by the author.
Logo for Human Made, an open-source anti-AI declaration. Below the logo is: Heartlines is a labour of love from each step of the publication process: reading to editing to designing. We do not accept AI-generated content. If you want a human to read your work, you need a human to write it.

BEHOLD! Our cover art for Issue 7 is an Aurora Award nominee for Best Cover Art/Interior Illustration! If you're a member of @csffa.bsky.social you can vote TODAY! We've been so lucky to work with Alice M -- Alice's work is consistently gorgeous and we'd love to see it rewarded.

Send us your words! We're open until the end of the month for submissions for Issue 11! We're looking for: 🌊 deep dives into SFF (not just surface level) 💗 established relationships 🍁more Canadian/Turtle Island submissions! www.heartlines-spec.com/submission-g...
We're looking for short fiction and poetry focused on long-term relationships: platonic, romantic, or familial. We don't want the blaze of new love or the obsession of a new friend. We want pieces that show that comfort that develops when people know each other for years.

Give us deep space, dusty frontiers, or dreamy fantasy. We want stories and poetry with strong, confident relationships amid all the sci-fi/fantasy. Stories where the character's choices, trials, and joys are all that much harder because of their existing relationships. Stories that feature dead or murdered spouses will be a hard sell. For more examples of our favoured vibes, check out this post.

We are especially interested in stories featuring queer platonic relationships, ace/aro love stories, and polycules.

LOOK! Look with your special eyes! Our cover for Issue 10 is inspired by a folktale of New Brunswick's ghost ship--a ghostly, firey schooner that appears in the Northumberland Strait. @itsbabypears.bsky.social used gorgeous colours to mimic the eerie effect of St. Elmo's Fire Coming March 31!

We're open for early subs from Dec 24-31! If you're an equity-deserving writer, send us SFF short fiction (500-3,500 words) & poetry. Not sure what we want? Less fabulism and more entrenched fantasy/scifi. We'd love pieces that deliver on the promise of their title (show us the monster!!)
our wishlist for the submission period. MORE: unabashedly fantasy or scifi settings; queerplatonic relationships, rural/pastoral settings; symbiotic relationships (toxic or beneficial). LESS: dead spouses; retellings; stories that don't show the monster; meet cutes (we're here for established relationships)

We’ve been looking for low-key features each province/territory and finding ways to make them more speculative. There’s the Ogopogo from Issue 5, the Newfoundland mummers from Issue 6, the canola fields of Saskatchewan in Issue 8.
Cover Art for Issue 5, a brightly lit tent next to the shoreline. A grey-haired person is by the water. In the lake is the Ogopogo. The cover has moody blue tonesCover art for Issue 6, brightly-coloured row houses under a purplish sky. A crowd of assorted mummers assemble in front--some are traditional some are more folkCover art for Issue 8, a spaceship in the middle of a canola field. The sky is lit up green and starry. The constellations are highlighted, making the shape of two lovers

A week ago we released Issue 9! We’ve been shining a light on the stories, poetry, and essays within the issue but now we want to highlight @itsbabypears.bsky.social gorgeous cover art. You might have noticed that we’ve been shifting our covers to be inspired by Canada’s provinces and territories🍁
