Note that Christine Smallbone (later Jensen MBE) is absent from the picture. Christine’s brother Phil Gay was the skipper on the Ross Cleveland which was lost just hours before the women were due to set off to London. Christine of course couldn’t join them when she got the news.

Thursday was World Maritime Day. The #HeadscarfRevolutionaries transformed tragedy into change when three #Hull trawlers were lost with 58 men in 1968. Through extraordinary courage and action, they improved safety in the fishing industry and saved countless lives.

Christine Jensen (formerly Smallbone) was awarded the MBE in the year 2000 new years honours list for services to trawler safety and the community of Hull. Christine’s MBE is now on display in the wonderful #HeadscarfRevolutionaries exhibition at Hull’s Maritime Museum.

Lillian Bilocca passed 38 years ago today. Leading the trawler safety campaign, Lil’s passion and determination was boundless, she refused to let any more die at sea and the lives saved are beyond measure. Lil challenged the fishing industry and changed it forever. #HeadscarfRevolutionaries
