Yeah this sounds sort of right, never actually read Mencius though. Also Laozian daoism and zhuangzian daoism were close seconds

Masks got mentioned by by there's a ttrpg for that!
Tumblr screencap

Deityofgaycrimes asked:
Do you have any suggestions for a ttrpg with low magic? Specifically where magic used to be a thing but is now only found in small places? A friend asked me for ttrpgs with this description and I have ideas but would appreciate help.

THEME: low or diminished magic

Hello friends, so if I'm understanding this ask correctly, you want a fantasy game where magic exists in traces, but isn't powerful. I tried to find low-magic settings , although your mileage may still vary with many of these!

Also, dont sleep on the short-list of recs at the end! There's a lot that might work for you

Below is the banners of Cleave and Masks of the Leviathan

Quite possibly my favorite drawing recently, and of course it's the one I just swiftly sketched while cooking.
Sketch of a middle-aged woman, smoking a cigarette. Drawn with ink, with sketchy fine liner and some gray ink brushstrokes.

Just released my scenario Skeletons on Mars to the wider public, after 7 very successful runs at Fastaval. We're talking fast-paced action, stoned comedy, and brutal violence in this short-form scenario which takes less than two hours to run - including briefing. rakatung.itch.io/skeletons-on...
A spaceship flying towards Mars, which has a giant and poorly drawn skeleton head superimposed over it.

A whole bunch of skeletons, drawn with ink, some in black, others with a bit of colour. They're goofy and sketchy.

Getting ever so slightly closer to a final cover for Masks of the Leviathan. Was going to ask which mask would be best, but then a playtester suggested that the ideal would be for both of them. A bit of magic in affinity designer, and voila!
Two scribbly drawn masks on a paper-textured background. The one to the left looks stern, and has a snake or something drawn on its forehead, with some symbols on the cheeks, the other looks more sad. In large letters it says "Masks of the Leviathan"

My art is rarely where I want it to be, but when I put it on a page I kinda like it.
Spread from a roleplaying game. Top left is a table that says "The Fates - Shadows", with a bunch of vague entries about remembrance and stuff. Bottom left is a portrait in a circle, with weird face paint. Right is a drawing of a figure holding a terrified mask.

Doing some work on the MotL cover. Not sure it's where I want it, but I think it's a functional concept.

Love this kind of scam. Somehow my little zine, which they somehow have 11 copies of, can be bought both as clothes and as shoes, in a variety of sizes. Also it's ludicrously overpriced, buying it at my Ko-Fi only costs 10 bucks.
Screencap of some bullshit e-shop. On it you can "buy" Heirs of the Leviathan by Dithmer, at the low, low price of $60.99

It's obviously a scam.

Troika! ( @melsonia.bsky.social) is one of those games I find difficult to get to the table, because people simply find it too zany. I love it though! Nothing beats rolling up some characters with weird backgrounds, and trying to fit it all into an adventure.
The cover of Troika! Numinous Edition. It's like an acid-trip of three figures walking, one mechanical with a hat, another with a long sword, and one with a weird wand.

I haven't gotten Incarnis on the table as much as I'd like, but the times I've played it didn't disappoint. It is a wonderful little game I backed on kickstarter, where you play mythological dramas. I kind of want to play a campaign at some point.

I've had a wonderful time with @jdragsky.bsky.social's Wanderhome. I think it strikes an incredibly fine balance, with being incredibly engaging and riddled with conflicts of character, while eschewing external conflict (I hope that makes sense)
Part of the cover for Wanderhome. Features three anthropomorphic animals travelling. First is a mole, holding a map. Next is a frog, cane in hand. And last is a rabbit, smiling, with a blue shirt and puffy trousers.

Earthdawn is the first roleplaying game I ever played, and it holds a very dear place in my heart. I remember getting the book for christmas, and delving into the history of Barsaive. It's a lot more trad than what I usually play nowadays, but I love it nonetheless
The cover of Earthdawn second edition. Features an array of fantasy characters, in classic pulpy style. There's a rockman with a huge sword, there's a troll, there's a scantily clad woman, there's a wizard casting a spell, there's a lizardman holding out an arrow for some reason, oh my, oh my

Bluebeard's Bride is sublime. It's another one of those games that reimagine what you can do with the PbtA framework, this time making a truly gruesome horror game.
The cover of Bluebeard's bride. Features the eponymous bluebeard, embracing a female figure.

This is a double feature - I love combining World of Dungeons (@johnharper.bsky.social) and The Perilous Wilds by Jason Lutes, for making a world and journeying through it.
A wonderfully stitched together picture combining the cover art of World of Dungeons, featuring an old-school map and some goblins, with the cover of Perilous Wilds, featuring a big monster looming over the forest

Trophy Dark is one of my favourite one-shot games for dark winter nights. I've never really gotten into Gold, but Dark works perfectly, and with a group of players buying into the play-to-lose aspects, it never misses.

I think Mothership by @seanmccoy.bsky.social is worth all the hype and support that it is getting. I'm not the first to pronounce the Warden's booklet to be one of the finest GM guides out there. And the modules are amazing too!
The cover of Mothership. It features a black and white illustration with a sketchy dead astronaut, something having evidently bursted out of their chest.

What can I say about Ironsworn by @shawntomkin.bsky.social except that it's a great game that superbly reinvents the PbtA framework. I've played it a bunch solo, and am currently guiding a 1-on-1 game which is turning out great.
The cover of ironsworn. Features a female warrior on her knees, clutching a sword. Glowing orange energy slithers along the ground towards the viewer

Stars Without Number is much in the same category as Traveller for me, but is included here because of a great series of campaigns I was a player in. We went through space trucking, civil war and espionage drama during the time it lasted.

What I love about Mars Colony is the way that I can get to talk politics with my friends without really talking about politics. I'm really looking forward to trying out the sequel, 39 Dark, as it seems a little less... cynical? Anyway, a great, sometimes intense, time.

I think Bleak Spirit (by @potatocubed.bsky.social) is a really great GM-less roleplaying game. The way everyone writes down their own theories about what is going on both speeds up gameplay, and allows for amazing post-game discussions.

Today I'm playtesting When Hunger Struck, which is essentially a kind of Dread scenario about a city of mad anarchists, pushed to the brink by starvation. The first playtest was a complete dud, so hopefully it works this time!

I have very fond memories of the Agon campaign I've run. It was a glorious romp from isle to isle, the epic deeds were many and the gods were intermittently pleased and very angry.

I love Traveller - I've only played the Mongoose first edition, but own a bunch of books in it. It is probably the roleplaying game I've spent the most time on not playing, just by sitting down and creating characters and mapping sectors.
