What might Labour’s free personal care pledge actually mean?
With the term ‘personal care’ recently appearing in the debate on social care, what does it actually mean? Camille Oung, Nina Hemmings and Laura Schlepper give their expert take.

The weird thing about the whole ‘dementia tax/death tax’ stuff is it implies we don’t already have one. Surely we basically do, we just don’t tell people about it in advance and it’s totally unpredictable and random.

I think there is something particularly special that by far the most predominant flag now is the EU flag - pride in country does not preclude valuing partnership with others.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Cut it back very hard, you won't kill it. You can even cut it off a couple of feet from the ground if you really want to regain control, but will be a year or two before it flowers again.

We need ‘social care’ to enable flourishing not mere survival - “As a creaking family member of a large square peg, my plea for Casey, Burnham…and my wider sector is for real choice and some vision and creativity. Then the money. Please.”

I enjoyed Emily Wilson in the @lrb.co.uk and thought she was actually much more balanced in her views than came across in the reports. I thought the scene near the end where weapons were being named as they were posted through the ceiling was hilarious - like one of those shape fitting toddler toys.

And in doing so yes to contribute to the physical and economic health of the nation, but not just by getting and keeping people out of hospital! And maybe we might remember children's social care, and give people the start in life we would all want? 2/2

Is it too much to hope that today's speech presents social care as a positive thing in itself? Not just an adjunct to healthcare, not just for older people, but a service which can & should enable 1000s of people with physical disabilities, mental health issues, learning disabilities to thrive? 1/2

But I also hang on to the fact - or at least my strong belief rooted in decades of personal experience working alongside politicians - that 99% of the thousands of people who put themselves forward for election do so because they want to do something for their communities.
