In the high desert of Central Oregon, the Deschutes River is a lifeline for farmers and landowners. And when drought hits the region, it hits hard. But in a recent investigation, OPB has found that drought isn't the lone culprit in the misfortune of those who rely on that water.
opb.org
An Oregon law lets one wealthy region turn the desert green. When drought hits, farmers pay the price
During a historic drought, half of Central Oregon’s lifeblood river was diverted to a wealthy agricultural region that got a lot more water than its plants could drink. These water-rich landowners grew mostly grass and pasture for landscaping and grazing while water-starved farmers downstream fallowed fields of commercial crops. Century-old laws spur people to soak some of the state’s most expensive, least productive farmland — or risk losing rights to the water.
