A couple of years ago, as I was finishing my PhD, I aired some of my concerns about the environmental toll AI causes to a professor. They were (and likely still are) advocates of the tech. They had the audacity to say “Well, didn’t the invention of the printing press damage the environment?”

Hayden L. Nelson 🌲🐺🦫🔥🪵 @haydenlnelson.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Oh, also: AI bases virtually all its “content” on the microscopically small amount of material that’s been digitized. Those materials that are digitally available reflects a historical bias made by well-funded orgs to prioritize certain things. A whole universe of documents haven’t been digitized.

My thoughts on the AI discourse: the work of the historian is done through the friction of thinking. Countless hours of puzzling, questioning, and revising ideas. That’s how learning is done. The iterative process takes time, and oftentimes seems unproductive (no research or writing, just thought).

Let's do some Canadian pipeline-wildfire math. The Canadian Energy Center says growing oil exports by 1.5M barrels/day **could** boost GDP by ~31B annually. Meanwhile, wildfire smoke health costs alone - just the health costs, nothing else - averaged 23B/year, past tense. And they're growing fast.

The sawed-off butt of a pine log featuring three “VRL” stamp marks hangs on a grayish wall. The log was cut by the Virginia and Rainy Lake Company in the 1910s or 1920. It now hangs on the walls of the Carlton County Historical Society in Cloquet, Minnesota.
